Zhou Yuelong has claimed a big upset over reigning world champion Kyren Wilson to advance to the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters.
Zhou was dominant throughout as he thrashed Wilson in a 6-0 whitewash to send the world No. 3 packing.
The 26-year-old Chinese player rushed out to a 2-0 lead thanks to nice runs of 75 and 63 in the opening two frames.
Wilson was 66 points up in the third and looked like he would get on the board, but made a crucial error while attempting to cut a red to allow Zhou to steal the frame.
It was then all Zhou from there as he added breaks of 59 and 83 to close out the match.
Murphy beats Higgins to set up Zhou clash
In the other evening round of 16 match, Shaun Murphy took down John Higgins 6-3 to set up a quarter-final meeting with Zhou.
After Murphy won the first frame with a nice break of 62, Higgins re-claimed the early lead with two straight frames of his own – threatening to claim his 999th career century in the third before missing the black while on a run of 80.
Murphy then started to take control of the match to win the next four frames with breaks of 55, 56, 93 and 83, while Higgins looked increasingly error-prone and frustrated.
The world no. 7 stumbled in the eighth with two-straight fouls, allowing Higgins to steal the frame and have renewed hope in the match.
Murphy almost did it again in the ninth frame, missing the blue while on 64 points, but Higgins wasn’t able to capitalise with Murphy securing the victory.
In the afternoon matches, Pang Junxu eventually prevailed over Mark Allen in an epic encounter that had to be postponed to the evening, with Pang leading 5-4.
When they returned to the table following the night session, Allen sent the match to a deciding 11th frame, before Pang managed to finally close out the thrilling duel more than nine hours after the first cue-ball was struck.
Pang will next face Mark Selby, who cruised into the last eight with a 6-1 win over Cao Jin.
Cao started well by taking out the first frame, before Selby took over and claimed the remaining six fairly comfortably.
In the other quarter-final match-ups, defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan – who opened his campaign with a 6-1 win over Jinhao Zhou – will face Ding Junhui, while Judd Trump takes on Si Jiahui.
