Gary Wilson failed to retain his Scottish Open crown for a third year, as some of snooker biggest names battle it out in Edinburgh. After a rip-roaring four days at the 2024 Snooker Shoot Out, attention turns to Edinburgh and the Scottish Open, the third installment of the four-part Home Nations Series.

Gary Wilson was back to defend his titles won in 2022 and 2023, when he beat Joe O'Connor and Noppon Saengkham, respectively.

He picked up a winner's cheque for £80,000 each year, and there is added motivation for the players this time around with the champion's jackpot raised to a cool £100,000.

UK Championship winner Judd Trump opted not to participate in the ranking event, and we won't see the world No.1 at the Welsh Open in 2025 after he announced he was pulling out on Wednesday.

Ronnie O'Sullivan joined Trump in withdrawing from the competition before the first round.

But a stellar field included the likes of Mark Selby and home favorite John Higgins, although both fell in the second round.

There are plenty of big names still left in the draw, however, as the action ramps up in the Scottish capital.

When is the Scottish Open?

The 2024 Scottish Open will run from Monday, December 9 until Sunday, December 15, the date of the eagerly-awaited final.

The 2024 Scottish Open is being held at Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh, Scotland, which was also the venue for the last two tournaments.

What is the tournament format?

As is the case for all four Home Nations tournaments this season, all matches at the 2024 Scottish Open until the quarter-finals are best of seven frames, before moving to best of nine for the last eight.

The semi-finals are best of 11 frames, while the final is split over two sessions and is best of 17 frames.

Who is playing?

The top 32 players in the world are given direct entry into the main draw of the Scottish Open and each will face one of 32 qualifiers.

World No.1 Trump did not participate after his withdrawal, which meant Ishpreet Singh Chadha received a bye into the second round.
