Kyren Wilson joked with the crowd when describing the bizarre reason for his sprained ankle, as he edged his way past Luca Brecel to reach the Masters semi-finals. The reigning world champion admitted he could have embellished the truth to make the story sound more interesting, but revealed the true nature of the injury to the crowd inside Alexandra Palace.

Kyren Wilson pushed through the pain barrier in his scintillating 6-4 victory over Luca Brecel to reach the Masters semi-finals.
A mysterious ankle problem was clearly troubling the reigning world champion throughout the match, and its cause was surprisingly mundane.
The 33-year-old explained how the quilt had caught his foot in an awkward position as he slept in his hotel bed.

That was enough to result in an ankle sprain, but fortunately the 33-year-old was able to see the funny side in his post-match interview.
"I'm in bits after that," Wilson told Eurosport. "Thank you very much to everyone for making that such an amazing atmosphere. After what happened today, that is one of the best wins of my career.
"I could make up a story of how I sprained my ankle, make it really extravagant, but I fell asleep in bed and my foot landed in an awkward position for eight hours; I woke up and I couldn't move!

"So, it's not like I was having a bonk or I was being chased by the police. I could make up something and say 'I went kickboxing,' but I went to sleep in bed, and sprained my ankle."
Speaking in more detail about the incident in the Eurosport studio, he added: "My foot was upright against the quilt, and the pressure of that for eight hours straight meant I couldn't walk.
"It's the worst story in the world to explain why you've got a bad ankle. It's nothing cool, I fell asleep and woke up with a sprained ankle. It's so embarrassing, but that's the truth."

The match itself was an absolute classic, ebbing both ways before Wilson edged the 10th frame to seal a place in the semi-finals.
Brecel could have easily levelled the scores had he not left a pink in the middle of the table, which Wilson dispatched after a lengthy safety battle.
