Ronnie O'Sullivan was defeated 6-4 in a simply thrilling UK Championship first-round match against Zhou Yuelong on Tuesday. In the end, the eight-time UK champion was ultimately punished for multiple high-stakes errors during the match, none more notable than when he managed to snooker himself after being given a huge lifeline by his opponent to potentially force a decider.

Ronnie O'Sullivan's hopes of winning a ninth UK Championship title were put to bed after a mistake which he had committed "almost never throughout his career".
In Tuesday's afternoon session at the Barbican in York, O'Sullivan suffered a 6-4 defeat to Zhou Yuelong in the first round of the maiden Triple Crown event of the season.
While scoring significantly higher than his opponent - 698 total points compared to Zhou's 504 - the Chinese cueist put on a clinic of match-winning snooker, capitalising on multiple O'Sullivan errors to efficiently put frames to bed.
Zhou, though, did benefit from a major slice of luck in his victory, one which led TNT Sports commentator Neal Foulds to remark: "I cannot believe what I'm watching here".
Having quite remarkably stolen four frames from O'Sullivan - each time pouncing on a critical mistake to slam home a match-winning break - Zhou was a frame from victory and 46-0 up, with a first-ever win against O'Sullivan appearing tantalisingly close.
However, a skewed red to the bottom left pocket afforded O'Sullivan another visit, and it was a useful one - taking a 10-point lead but running out of position to force home the yellow.

The Rocket's blushes were somewhat spared by the brown, which covered just enough of the yellow to make it unpottable.
However, after a long time weighing up his options, Zhou proceeded with something quite unfathomable.
Zhou limply pushed the yellow against the right cushion, leaving it wide-open for O'Sullivan, and the rest of the colours were at the seven-time world champion's mercy to force a decider.
"What sort of a shot was that?" Foulds said. "Probably the worst shot he's ever played."
O'Sullivan, though, then followed up with something equally unbelievable.
Sinking the yellow, position seemed to completely evade the thought process of the 49-year-old, who managed to snooker himself on the green - spurning his opportunity and ultimately setting up Zhou to win the match.

"I cannot believe what I'm watching here. The pressure is getting to both players," Foulds said.
Dave Hendon added: "What is going on? Another twist. A remarkable end to what has been a remarkable match."
While Zhou's mistake was glaring, O'Sullivan's was downright hard to comprehend given his pedigree.
Alan McManus broke down what went wrong in the TNT Sports studio after the match, and felt Zhou was very fortunate to be the recipient.
"Almost never throughout his career does O'Sullivan let you off the hook," McManus said.
"That shot was horrible by Yuelong, he doesn't need telling that. Ronnie, to let him off the hook there, he's got a proverbial acre of space to play into with his cue ball.

"Somehow or another, he finds himself in behind the green. He should be playing it with a lot of left-hand side and erring towards the yellow spot area."
Analysing the moment again ahead of the evening session, McManus added: "When do you ever see O'Sullivan play a yellow like this?
"He's got tons of space to get the cue ball in the open and it's a straightforward put-away for a decider. He's got no business having his cue ball be anywhere near that brown.
"Throughout his career, you just haven't seen that. In this day and age, if you don't close the match out the way you're supposed to, that's what happens."
Zhou will face Mark Selby in the second round, with 'The Jester from Leicester' having beaten Lei Peifan 6-2 on the adjacent table.
