Mark Allen makes historic maximum break during World Snooker Championship clash at the Crucible - 'one of the most extraordinary 147s ever witnessed'

Mark Allen was trailing 10-2 against Chris Wakelin in their second-round match at the World Snooker Championship on Friday when he managed to hit a historic maximum. Allen’s very memorable 147 makes him the only player to hit a maximum at the World Championship, Masters and UK Championship, a historic achievement that many greats of the game have only dreamed of completing.

Mark Allen hit a maximum 147 break against Chris Wakelin in the World Championship at the Crucible, getting the crowd on their feet as he punched the air in joy.
His clearance was historic as well, making the Northern Irishman the only player to hit a maximum in every event in snooker’s coveted ‘triple crown’.
This is the third season in the last four that Allen has hit a maximum, but this week’s could be the most important.
Allen is attempting to fight back against Wakelin, who has a comfortable 10-3 lead in their second-round encounter, in the best-of-25 frames match, which is live on TNT Sports and discovery+
Allen hit a 147 in 2016 at the UK Championship against Rod Lawler, and again cleared the table in one visit against Mark Selby in the Masters last season.
"One of the most extraordinary 147s ever witnessed," said TNT Sports commentator Phil Yates.
"Simply brilliant, break-building perfection on snooker's highest stage."
Wakelin was quickly out of his seat with a broad smile on his face to congratulate his rival, as Allen soaked up the applause from the crowd.

Allen’s 147 is not the first of this year’s tournament. That accolade went to Jackson Page, who also achieved history by making two maximum breaks in the same match last week against Allan Taylor.
But Allen’s clearance is a different slice of history for the former Masters winner.
Even Ronnie O’Sullivan has not achieved a maximum in all three triple crown events - the Rocket having never hit a 147 at the Masters.
This is Allen’s fifth maximum at ranking-level events, the other two coming at the Northern Ireland Open in 2021 and the British Open last season.
"The Crucible theatre creates magic, it never fails," added Yates from the commentary box.
"But for someone to make a 147 after failing to pot a ball for the three previous frames, and to be 10-2 behind, it was clear - the intentions were obvious when he got towards the middle of that break, he could have gone up earlier on for a blue and prioritised on winning the frame but no, he was intent on staying on the black.
"And boy, did that decision pay off."
