SELBY CLAIMS CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS TITLE WITH VICTORY OVER TRUMP
Mark Selby claimed the elite Champion of Champions title for the first time with a dominant 10-5 final win over world No. 1 Judd Trump in his home city of Leicester.
Resuming 5-4 clear after hitting back from 3-1 behind in Sunday's afternoon session, Trump produced a 61 to level at 5-5 before watching his inspired opponent reel off the final five frames with runs of 60, 138 - the highest break of the tournament - 101 and a closing 132 completing a merited win.
While Trump again struggled with his new cue, it should not detract from Selby's performance as a trademark mixture of solid safety play and heavy scoring helped him pocket the £150,000 first prize.
The world No. 11 defeated Stephen Maguire (4-0), Mark Williams (6-5) and Neil Robertson (6-2) to reach the title match at the Mattioli Arena, but saved his best for last with three straight centuries against Trump.
"I felt like I played good from start to finish," said the four-time world champion on ITV. "I didn't feel like I missed much. I knew I had to play well. If you don't, you aren't going to win.
"I'd put Judd up there with Ronnie [O'Sullivan]. He is so good to watch, and has been up there for a few years now.
"These are the sort of matches you want to play."
FIRST SESSION REPORT
Mark Selby will carry a 5-4 lead over Judd Trump into the final session of the Champion of Champions title match in Leicester on Sunday night after an absorbing afternoon battle between the former Crucible winners.
World No. 1 Trump raced 3-1 clear with breaks of 111, 73 and 114 in a blistering start to the day with Selby responding courtesy of a 102 in the second frame.
But it was Selby who hit back strongly in his home city with a combination of strong matchplay and clinical scoring seeing him reel off four straight frames boosted by 70, 99, 65 and 64 to move 5-3 clear.
It looked likely to be a 6-3 advantage as Selby moved 33-0 ahead in the ninth frame, but a stunning long red by Trump provided him with the platform to end an absorbing session with a fabulous run of 71.
The first man to 10 frames at Mattioli Arena will claim the trophy and the £150,000 first prize when they resume at 19:00 UK time on Sunday evening.

RESULT: TRUMP 5-10 SELBY
"There are no positives to take," said Trump. "I couldn't win with that cue. Mark played extremely well. I'm not making excuses. He showed why he is one of the greats."

Pressure blue from Trump fails to drop to green pocket. Not sure the reserves are there for Judd this evening. Selby gifted another simple starter. What is the tariff going to be here for Trump?
