Welcome to our live coverage of the 2024 British Open with Tuesday's action seeing English Open champion Neil Robertson begin his quest for back-to-back titles with a 4-1 win against Chris Totten at the Centaur in Cheltenham. Mark Allen completed a 4-1 win over Aaron Hill before Judd Trump faced former British Open champion Ryan Day in the evening session.

It wasn't pretty, but it still went as it almost always goes: Judd wins yet another first-to-four and moves into the last 32.

Ryan's had plenty of chances in this match – you get the sense Judd knows he'll find enough to win, however much that ends up being. But his opponent can pot, and if he plays himself into a bit of form while closing the gap, thou never know ... except as I type, he ups the power to ruffle pack off black, only to - and how often do we see this? – miss the pot. Might that be his final shot of the match?

Nervelessly and expertly, Judd clears the colors to go one away.

From up in baulk, Judd strokes a gorgeous brown long to right corner, and the steal is on.

He sets himself for it and doubles nicely, but he's not on the brown, which looks like it might be the crucial ball in this frame; the chase is on.

Judd twice misses a thin contact, then Ryan leaves him one along black cush; he slides it home nicely, but with the green on the side, it won't be easy to pinch the frame at this visit.

But off the yellow, he comes too far to pot the next red, meaning we're back playing safety, frame still in the balance.

This is much better from Ryan and the frame should soon be his - but a loose positional shot makes the next pot harder – he sinks it – but can he keep doing so, because he's going to have to. And, as I type, he jawses a mid-distancer and Judd cuts home a starter.

Nice starter from Judd, but he soon runs out of position so plays back to the bottom rail, again able to make the smart call when disappointed. For all the good it does him, Ryan opening the pack via attacking safety, then sending down a starter and looking better than he has until this point, with plenty of balls still available.

Ryan does the necessary and more, caressing pink down the rail, and perhaps he's found himself; let's hope so.

He can, though, cut a fine starter into the corner, and needs to the blue to level the match. Good for him.

Instead, his safety gets him back in, but with the frame almost his, he comes up the table only for the white to stop with the black between it and the final red. So he comes off the side to hit is, leaving it on the side rail close to the bag; Ryan can't slide it home with the rest.

He giveth and he taketh away. Judd bins one of the trickier reds, but in the process kisses the other closer to the rail. So with three left, it's a safety, and that's the relentless competitor announcing himself – once upon a time he'd have done anything to keep the run going.

I hate to say it, but I can't remember the last time I saw Ryan face a top player and it not be like this. He misses to right-centre, but there are two reds near the side rail so the clear-up is far from guaranteed.

Dreadful shot from Judd, catching pink before red and going in-off; the ref'll be relieved he's not been put back because he moved a fair few balls. Ryan, though, butchers a red from middle to left corner, and Judd quickly restores the black to its spot. However a kiss he didn't want makes the next ball harder than necessary and he misses it along the cushion, so here goes Ryan again...

Oh Ryan. Oh mate. He misses the aforementioned black, but manages not to leave anything. Still, the sense is he must win this frame, and that was an opportunity to move in that direction, spurned.

Ruan nails a decent starter and quickly gets to work, the black available to both pockets. But when he digs into the pack, he yields nothing but a tight cut-back to middle ... and he sends it down nicely. The blue follows, then a red, and he's back on the big dog in prime position.

A poor frame from Judd, but he still manages a run of 55 to forge in front.

Yeah, this is more like it. Judd calmly removes balls and Ryan, who might be wondering if he's missed his chance, needs snookers.

...but when he looks to send one to the yellow bag, he gets nowhere near, and you'd expect Judd to punish so careless an oversight. Talking of which, a pink to middle stays out, and this is not the start he'll have wanted. Which, in a way, puts Ryan under pressure to cash in ... but instead he misses the simplest of blacks. Surely Judd now seizes the frame?

Judd quickly makes a mess of working position, then when he comes back he can't force through a plant, so it's a chance for Ryan...

Ryan won this event two years ago at a time he really needed it, but he's been wont to fold against the better players of late, especially if things don't go for him early doors. But he's first in here, ramming a starter to left corner, but with no apparent plan of what color he might pot, so it's back to baulk ... for all the good it does him, Judd spanking a wondrous opener from tight to the bottom rail. He is so, so good, and I wonder if Ryan thinks he can beat him tonight.

Allen tries to spring the final red off top cushion, ends up being forced to play safe due to being hampered by black. Just safety to follow. This frame back in the balance.

Very nice break on the move here from Hill, but he then misses a red by a mile to left middle. That is a poor finale to the break, and it could be costly.

But he loses the cue ball on 24 as white careers into brown in slotting blue. Decent recovery pot on a mid-range red to continue break.

Can't be missing colours off spots at this level. Hill 59 points behind with a possible 61 remaining. Long way back from here. Pink doesn't drop, and that is frame over. A 2-0 lead for the Antrim man. Breaks of 102 and 56 leaves him halfway from the third round.

But he misses a pink off the spot when he appeared to have done the hard part. Chance then for Hill to launch the counter punch, but he jaws a black off the spot. Very decent chance spurned.

Hill pushed the boat out with a tough long red, gets unlucky as red stays out and catches white on way down table and an easy starter for the Northern Irishman presents itself. Which never tends to be good news. Allen again on the move.
