While Finland's Hautamaeki dazzled the crowd with two superb jumps, of 214 and 221 metres, all eyes were on double world champion Malysz, who needed to finish comfortably ahead of Germany's Sven Hannawald in order to secure the overall World Cup title.
Malysz delivered with another solid performance, recording the longest jump of the competition with a first round effort of 224.5m and a second round jump of 209.5m, good for second place. The Pole's overall score, of 432.3, was a mere 1.2 points behind Hautamaeki's winning score of 433.5 points.
Martin Hoellwarth of Austria finished a distant third, with a score of 386.4 points, while Germany's Hannawald was unable to challenge Malysz and was forced to settle with fourth place, on 384.4 points.
There is now only one competition remaining on the ski jumping World Cup calendar, with another K185 jump set for Sunday in Planica. While the top two positions are secured, with Malysz and Hannawald in first and second, there will be a battle for third place between Andreas Widhoelzl, Janne Ahonen and Florian Liegl.
