Wasps 37-10 Newport Gwent Dragons
Wasps were rewarded for their defiance of wintry conditions by surging to the summit of Pool Six of the Heineken Cup with a bonus-point 37-10 victory over Newport Gwent Dragons at a near-deserted Adams Park.
A crowd of only 1,236 attended a match that was under threat until 10.15am on Sunday morning when the required medical support was secured after Bucks County had stated they would be unable to supply a paramedic team due to their need to service the local area.
Melting snow made the ball slippery, taking its toll on a contest that was short on highlights until the floodgates opened in the second half. Hooker Joe Ward crossed in the 49th minute after the first half had finished 3-3 and Wasps never looked back against the pool's bottom-placed team. Man of the match Dave Walder kicked 17 points while full-back Mark van Gisbergen, winger Tom Varndell and scrum-half Nic Berry also finished with tries.
Wasps' sixth successive victory has lifted them three points clear of Toulouse into first place, keeping their aspirations of qualifying for the quarter-finals intact.
Toulouse are likely to regain control of the pool when their clash with Glasgow, postponed once again on Sunday, is staged on Tuesday night.
But with fixtures against Glasgow and Toulouse to come in January, Wasps have a super chance of reaching the knockout stages.
Leicester 22-22 Perpignan
Leicester's Heineken Cup ambitions suffered a setback after 14-man Perpignan snatched a dramatic 22-22 draw in the last minute at frozen Welford Road.
The Tigers had led 13-6 with a try from Alesana Tuilagi late in the first half but they failed to kill off Perpignan - Billy Twelvetrees missed four penalties - and paid the price.
Perpignan hit back with a try from scrum-half David Mele and sealed the draw with a late penalty from fly-half Nicolas Laharrague, despite having lock Rimas Alvarez Kairelis in the sin-bin. Leicester are not out of the quarter-final hunt but given they still have to travel to pool leaders Scarlets, Sunday's draw probably favours Perpignan. It was certainly the visitors who were celebrating at the final whistle.
Cardiff 19-23 Northampton
Northampton maintained their perfect Heineken Cup record by winning a thriller at the Cardiff City Stadium 23-19 after Cardiff Blues had been hit by the second-half dismissal of Xavier Rush.
Calum Clark crossed over for the decisive score, and his side's only try, seven minutes from the end to make the Blues pay for Rush's red card for a dangerous tackle on Courtney Lawes.
The Blues had looked like they might hold on, with Richard Mustoe's try just after the break plus 14 points from the boot of Dan Parks rewarding their endeavour. But it was the Saints' pack that again ultimately decided the contest, with Tongan prop Soane Tonga'uiha deservedly named man of the match, while Steve Myler's six penalties kept the scoreboard ticking over.
It meant a first home loss in 13 matches in the competition for the Welshmen, who again failed to come to grips with the Saints pack after their dominance at Franklin's Gardens last time out.
