But having spent 18 hours in hospital in Swansea the flanker returned to the Wallabies team hotel cleared of any serious injury and vowing to play again during the four-week tour of the UK and Italy.
McMeniman was playing his first match after returning from a lengthy lay-off following a shoulder reconstruction and thought he was facing more time on the sidelines when an incident in the ruck left him motionless and with a burning sensation in his neck at the Liberty Stadium.
"My initial reaction was 'Oh no not again'," McMeniman said.
"When I made the tackle my head was in the wrong spot and it caused a hyperflexion and stretched the nerves in my neck. It's still a bit numb around the neck region but it feels a lot better today than it did last night."
Martin Raftery - the Wallabies team doctor - said that McMeniman was being made to rest before being reassessed again in 48 hours.
"This injury is very similar to a 'burner', a common neck problem which can have varied recovery time," Raftery said.
"Sometines it settles down in a day or two or it can take longer in some cases. The good thing is that there is no fracture or bruising around the spine."
McMeniman also said that he is optimistic that he will be a quick recovery and is keen to make another appearance during the tour.
"It's going to come down to how confident I am with [the injury] and whether it settles down but I'm very hopeful that I'll be able to play again on the tour."
