There were crashes aplenty at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez with Marc Marquez just one of the high-profile riders to hit the surface in Saturday's Sprint race. TNT Sports pundit Sylvain Guintoli said it was "like Mario Kart", and demanded that the track be "sorted". Michael Laverty said the "best riders in the world" were crashing for events "outside of their control".

'What is going on?!’ – Marc Marquez ‘just a fraction wide’ as he crashes in Jerez

The Jerez track "needs to be sorted" following several crashes at the Spanish GP Sprint race, according to TNT Sports pundit Sylvain Guintoli.
Marc Marquez was just one of the high-profile riders to crash in Saturday's mayhem as Jorge Martin consolidated his place as the championship leader with a memorable victory.
While Marquez recovered to claim a credible seventh place, the races were over for Brad Binder, and Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team) in the ninth lap after they went down Turn 5 independently of one another.
Earlier, Marquez had taken pole position in qualifying, and while the weather had improved for the Sprint race, Michael Laverty explained that "damp patches" had caused havoc for the riders, with five going down within a minute of each other.
"That is not good enough. The track needs to be sorted," Guintoli said.
"These are not conditions the riders wanted to race in. It was a crazy race and crazy to watch, but it’s not on really.

"This is because the conditions are changing a little bit and that water is seeping through the surface of the track."
Delving deeper into Marquez's crash, which occurred when the eight-time world champion was in the lead, Laverty explained: "The Angel Nieto corner, like Turn 5, has a weeper there, since 2013. They have resurfaced it twice since then.
"I felt for Marc. He had done everything correctly. These crashes aren’t really a rider error. You are hanging down the outside. You can’t see the damp patch.
"Perhaps on that lap, at Turn 8, it had a weep through the surface. Heartbreak."

The "best riders in the world" were crashing through events that were "outside of their control", continued Laverty.
On the damp patches, he added: “The riders know that they are there. They are precarious. The tyres go over it, they get a little grippier.
“All of a sudden, conditions change. A temperature shift or a humidity shift.
“The water gets sucked up to the surface again. The weepers rise to the surface.
“The conditions changed momentarily.”

Guintoli: MotoGP have ‘discovered a character that is really brilliant’ in Acosta

Guintoli added: "From the aerial view you can see that, on the inside, it is dry. That’s what Marc used to pass Binder, to pass Martin and [Miguel] Oliveira.
"The little patch, on the corner exit as you’re back on the throttle, and you don’t expect it. It’s like Mario Kart. Traps that are thrown at you, as you’re riding. That’s not ideal.
"You’d expect track conditions to improve. Not water thrown into random places.”
