ACOSTA HANDED VICTORY FOLLOWING DRAMATIC MARQUEZ PENALTY
Pedro Acosta is finally a MotoGP Sprint winner, claiming P1 following an epic Thai GP duel. The No. 37 crossed the line in first position after Marc Marquez was handed a controversial penalty after his move at the final corner on the penultimate lap.
Marquez was able to hold onto P2, remaining calm after the Sprint and stating that it was the steward’s decision. Meanwhile, Raul Fernandez claimed the final spot on the podium, showing incredible pace to begin the 2026 season – finishing as the top Aprilia.
His Trackhouse team-mate Ai Ogura claimed fourth while Jorge Martin crossed the line in fifth, later announced to be under investigation owing to tyre pressures. Further back, Francesco Bagnaia finished inside the points while Alex Marquez missed out after a difficult opening lap.
There was plenty of drama too, with race favourite Marco Bezzecchi crashing out of the lead on the opening lap – it was no points scored for the Italian on Saturday. Toprak Razgatlioglu also crashed after a strong start to his grand prix career.
Now attention turns to the main event: the Thai GP. Join us on Sunday at 08:00 UK time for another dramatic morning of action as we go racing over 26 laps.

ACOSTA: ‘MAYBE I DON’T FEEL LIKE A WINNER YET’
Pedro Acosta is finally a MotoGP Sprint winner, claiming P1 following a dramatic final two laps of action. However, Acosta is still searching for a ‘real victory’ tomorrow as he becomes the first KTM rider to lead the MotoGP world championship!
Acosta added: "It’s super cool to have a Sprint like this with Marc, and maybe I don’t feel like a winner yet, as he let me pass. We have another opportunity tomorrow, and all the crew is working great, and I just want to thank everyone from Mattighofen, as we are working super hard.
"I also want to thank everyone who helps me every day from home, like my management team. It’s a good way to start the season, but maybe tomorrow we will try and get the real victory!"

MARC MARQUEZ: ‘RACE DIRECTION DECIDES’
Following a dramatic conclusion to the Thai GP Sprint, Marc Marquez reflects on a solid performance and THAT move, which handed him a penalty.
Marc Marquez said: "In my opinion, race direction decides.
"When I saw Bezzecchi crashed I slowed down the race and tried to control as I know this championship is super long. Every time Pedro overtook me and overtook him straight away at the next corner.
"Unfortunately, I got that penalty but nine points, the first race after injury, I am happy!"
Davide Tardozzi also gave his opinion on the matter:

FERNANDEZ: 'IT WAS FOR THE TEAM!'
Claiming his first podium and continuing his 2025 form, Raul Fernandez finished third and dedicated the result to his team. However, the Spanish star is already looking for further improvements down the straight!
Fernandez said: "As I told you this morning in qualifying, it was for the team! The team and Aprilia did a good job, as today I felt really good with the bike, as normally I don’t like using the soft tyre in the Sprint.
"Tomorrow will be a very long race, but I managed today as I saw the gap between Martin and me. I just enjoyed the battle between Marc and Pedro, but hopefully tomorrow we can find something on the straight as we lost a lot of time in the first and second sector.
"But I am happy we started the year well, it is also the first time I have started the MotoGP world championship with points, so I am happy!"

DROP ONE POSITION, ACOSTA WINS!
Marc Marquez has been handed a drop-one-position penalty on the final lap, allowing Acosta through at the final corner to hand the KTM rider victory. Acosta wins the Sprint ahead of Marc Marquez, with Raul Fernandez claiming the final spot on the podium.
0.108s separates the pair at the line in a dramatic conclusion to the Thai Sprint!

CONTACT BETWEEN THE LEADERS
Things are beginning to heat up on the final two laps, with a blockbuster finish in store in the opening Sprint of the 2026 season. Marc Marquez launched a move at the final corner, pushing Pedro Acosta wide after a brave, late move.
The incident is now under review...

MARC’S MISTAKE
Marc Marquez ran wide at turn three, briefly dropping to second position before using the drive to reclaim the lead. Acosta senses an opportunity at the final corner, running wide this time – unable to make it work.

The Thai fans are being treated to an incredible show as the No. 93 looks to be struggling in the braking zones… Acosta tried another move at the final corner, unable to hold onto P1 at the final corner!

ROOKIE WATCH
Looking at the 2026 rookies, Diogo Moreira sits in P13, just two positions behind his LCR teammate Johann Zarco. It’s a solid performance for the Brazilian, who will face his home GP next time out.
Reigning WorldSBK champion Toprak Razgatlioglu is running in P15, most importantly ahead of Alex Rins and Fabio Quartararo. The factory Yamaha rider, Quartararo, is continuing to struggle this weekend and showed signs of frustration yesterday!
7/13
ACOSTA ATTACKS
At the head of the field, Marc Marquez’s lead sits at three-tenths of a second – setting a relentless pace. However, in classic Acosta fashion, the No. 37 is ready to pounce if he can find an opportunity. Acosta has yet to find his first Grand Prix win in the premier class, and although today’s Sprint wouldn’t count towards that statistic, it would set things up for Sunday.
The move from Acosta arrives at the final corner, launching an attack at turn 12, nearly making contact with Marc Marquez on the exit – the battle is ON!
6/13
ALEX MARQUEZ ON THE CHARGE
Alex Marquez is continuing to fight his way through the field, now edging towards the top 10 after a tough opening lap. Any points would be a strong result for the No. 73, who enters 2026 as a championship contender.
In the point scoring positions, Ai Ogura sits in P5 ahead of Joan Mir following an impressive pre-season for HRC. Francesco Bagnaia is P8, continuing to work his way up the order as he looks to return to form this season.
4/13
APRILIA VS APRILIA
Further back, it’s a fight between two Aprilias: Raul Fernandez and Jorge Martin! Fernandez continues to lead the way in the battle for third position, sitting ahead of the 2024 world champion.
At the front, Marc Marquez sets the fastest lap of the Sprint, settling into a strong rhythm at the head of the field. We saw last year how confident Marc could be in P1 at the Thai GP – could this be a repeat?
2/13
MARQUEZ RUNS WIDE AS BEZZECCHI CRASHES
Marc Marquez ran wide at the entry to turn three, allowing the Italian to retake the lead. However, everything soon unfolded for the Italian, crashing out of the lead on the second lap of action. Now the duel is between Marc Marquez and Pedro Acosta, who has already shown his front wheel to the No. 93!

LIGHTS OUT
We are GO in 2026!! It’s a great start from Marc Marquyez, who steals the lead on the run to turn one, with polesitter Marco Bezzecchi dropping to second. The Italian looks to return the favour at turn three as Alex Marquez runs wide further back – dropping outside the top 10. Raul Fernandez remains in third and had front-seat tickets to Bezzecchi’s move in the second half of the lap.
At the end of lap one, it’s Marc Marquez who leads following a pass at the final corner…

WARM UP LAP
We’re off onto the warm up lap, the final chance for the riders to get heat into their tyres and brakes and get their mind up to speed. Conditions remain scorching as we get set to go racing for the first time since November!
07:55
FIVE MINUTE WARNING
For the first time in 2026, it’s nearly time for lights out for a highly anticipated Sprint on ‘Super Saturday’! Just five minutes separate us from lights out, so if you want to grab a last-minute coffee, now is your final chance…

HAVE YOU MISSED ANYTHING?
Away from the racing action, there’s been plenty of MotoGP news over the past few weeks, so let’s have a quick refresher!
First of all, and perhaps the biggest news across social media and online… The Australian GP will have a new home from 2027 as MotoGP heads to Adelaide to begin a six-year agreement. In turn, Phillip Island will no longer feature on the calendar as the city centre circuit debuts.

There’s been plenty of silly season discussion, too, from Fabio Quartararo and Honda being linked together to Francesco Bagnaia’s move to Aprilia being discussed in the media. NOTHING is signed or confirmed, but it seems that riders are eager to sign contracts early in 2026.

BEAUTIFUL BURIRAM: CHANG INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT
We’re in Thailand, which for the last season has hosted the MotoGP season opener, so why not get to know this unique 2.83-mile circuit? It’s another venue designed by the legendary designer, Hermann Tilke, which features 12 corners and a very technical final sector.
The circuit first hosted WorldSBK in 2015, before MotoGP came to town for the first time in 2018. Marc Marquez remains the most successful rider at this venue, winning three Grand Prix – can he make it four this weekend?
