Welterweight title changes hands again

Jack Della Maddalena's striking proved too much for Belal Muhammad as he defeated the welterweight champion by unanimous decision.
In every round Della Maddalena out landed Muhammad, who won the title in his last fight against Britain's Leon Edwards, and showed improved takedown defence to stay on his feet for most of the contest and even when his opponent took him to ground in the last couple of rounds, he fought his way back to his feet.
The classic last saw momentum swing both ways but it was the Australian who landed the superior shots, especially a brutal knee lift, to take the fight on all three cards and ultimately the win.
With two of the three cards in his favour 48-47 (the other was 49-46), this last-round effort proved crucial.
In the co-main event, Valentina Shevchenko successfully defended her flyweight title with a narrow victory 48-47, on all three judges’ scorecard against Manon Fiorot.
Shevchenko was dominant in the first and fourth rounds, leaving her French opponent a bloody mess from her punishing right hands, but the other three were close affairs.
Elsewhere, Hall of Fame fighter Jose Aldo announced his retirement after a brutal end of the third round, where he took multiple elbows to the end, swinging the contest in Aiemann Zahabi’s favour.
Although still showcasing his precision punching, Aldo struggled for stamina throughout and said afterwards his body was not up to fighting in the UFC anymore.
Natalia Silva was impressive in victory over former Shevchenko opponent and number one flyweight contender and has surely set herself up for a title shot.
The knockout of the night came from home fighter Mike Malott who delighted the Montreal crowd in knocking out American Charles Radtke.

New champion welcomes Islam challenge

There has been suggestion lightweight king and pound-for-pound number one Islam Makhachev will look to move up to welterweight and this is a challenge the new champion would relish.
"I think its a beautiful challenge, he's the pound for pound number one," Della Maddalena said on TNT Sports, also suggesting revenge for his countryman, featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski - who twice lost to Makhachev.
"I'm going to get him back for Volk.
"Australia we've got three of these babies," referring to him becoming the third Australian champion after Robert Whitaker and Volkanovski.
Makhachev responded on X saying "time to become double champion...let's go."

Della Maddalena wins welterweight crown

The Aussie takes the title winning by unanimous decision 48-47 (twice) and 49-46.

Muhammad-Della Maddalena: Round 5

The challenger was instructed to jab and move and that's exactly what he did in the early stages of the fight, opening up another cut on Muhammad, this time on the cheek, possibly from a knee lift. Muhammad then took Della Maddalena to the mat and this time kept control for 90 seconds or so before the Aussie got himself to his feet. A heavy left and right turn the fight in Della Maddalena's favour for a moment as he follows up with brutal shots against the Octagon. The champion takes the opponent down again but when they get back to their feet the Perth fighter lands a number of blows to surely take the last round and the fight.

Muhammad-Della Maddalena: Round 4

The champion needed to turn up the heat and that is exactly what he did landing repeatedly until he forced Della Maddalena into a war which saw both stung a little. Muhammad took Della Maddalena down but the Aussie quickly got back to his feet and turned the situation to his advantage briefly but the champion then landed a good kick and more right hands, bloodying his opponent around the ear. Certainly the champion'sbest round despite him taking a big shot himself in the final moments.

Muhammad-Della Maddalena: Round 3

Muhammad is getting through with more shots but it is Della Maddalena's which look the more effective and he rocks the champion's head from side to side with his well-timed counters. He is also defending Muhammad's attempts at takedowns and even turning these moments into his advantage. A fantastic display from the Perth fighter at present.

Muhammad-Della Maddalena: Round 2

Della Maddalena is having fun in there. His takedown defence has been sound, stopping Muhammad from taking him down to the mat and he is getting the better of the stand up battle. A powerful right hand has bloodied the champion's nose. A long way to go but you'd favour Australia getting another UFC champion at this stage.

Muhammad-Della Maddalena: Round 1

Della Maddalena begins the aggressor but Muhammad lands telling right hand blows, before the Aussie connects with a left-footed kick upstairs and follows it with a short left. The Aussie outworks the champion and probably takes the opener which ended with the challenger landing an uppercut while taking an elbow.

Confident-looking champion makes way to centre

There are many flashier entrances, but Muhammad, draped in the Palestine flag, looks supremely focused for the difficult job ahead.

A Hall of Fame resume and no mistake

Shevchenko wins on points!

She takes the fight 48-47 on all three cards.

Shevchenko-Fiorot: Round 5

How much credit do judges give Fiorot for the control she has against the Octagon? In each round excep the first she has held her opponent there for at least a minute. This round saw less clear dominance from Shevchenko in stand up which may see the round go to Fiorot.

Shevchenko-Fiorot: Round 4

Shevchenko showing a champion's heart. She had the better of things early, bloodying her opponent's mouth again, but Fiorot got some control again forcing her into the Octagon. Shevchenko took the French fighter down but immediately she was up and pounding the champ's legs. Shevchenko then caught Fiorot with a big counter right in the last 20 seconds knocking her down and followed up with ground and pound on the buzzer.

Shevchenko-Fiorot: Round 3

Amazingly, considering the dominance from the champion in the opener, the fight looks like it could be turning. Shevchenko has the edge in stand up, but is not forcing the fight and just waiting on the back foot. Half the round was spent with Fiorot forcing her opponent against the Octagon, landing knees to the back of Shevchenko's legs.

Shevchenko-Fiorot: Round 2

Fiorot is still eating too many right hands, but competed a lot better, fighting her way up from a takedown, then preventing Shevchenko from recording another. In the final two minutes she forced the champion against the Octagon and then controlled proceedings until the buzzer, ending with a knee which her opponent just managed to block.

Shevchenko-Fiorot: Round 1

Dominant round from the champion. Despite her superior reach, Fiorot struggles early on to keep the champion out of range, is caught with right hands when he closes in and a lump develops on the French fighter's shin early on, before an overhand right leaves Fiorot's face a crimson mess with bloody pouring from nose, mouth and a cut by her left eye. Spinning back punches and back kicks are added and then the round ends with Shevchenko on top on the floor, digging in shots to the body.

Game face on from Shevchenko

She's been here many times before.

Aldo announces retirement!

The hall of farmer says this will be his last fight.
"This was a very tough week," Aldo said. "My body was suffering cutting weight. I just don't have it anymore."

Zahabi wins unanimous decision!

All three judges give him the fight 29-28. Aldo sits by the edge of the Octagon in despair.

Aldo-Zahabi: Round 3

What a round! An incredible kick, then follow up knee-left has Zahabi running backwards around the Octagon, with Aldo after him launching kicks and knees. Aldo looked like he gassed himself out though with Zahabi getting through with big shots and, after looking despairingly at the clock and seeing three minutes remaining, Aldo fell to the floor and was forced to take elbows from the Canadian. Aldo's head was left a bloody mess, as was the canvas, after repeated elbows to his head, which could have led to a stoppage. That was as brutal as it gets. Both corners chair their fighter at the end of the round.

Aldo-Zahabi: Round 2

A close second round. Aldo looks the much older fighter, but Zahabi did not consistently press with the energy to push home his advantage. Again the first half of the round was Aldo's as landed jabs and hooks, but Zahabi, after coming close to a deduction for kicks just south of the border, finished well getting through with both hands.

Aldo-Zahabi: Round 1

An intriguing first round, Aldo dominating early showcasing his combination punching, especially downstairs but as the round wire on Zhabi found his range and landed flurries himself backing up the Brazilian against the Octagon.

Aldo looking to add to legacy

Living legend Jose Aldo returns to Canada, where he made his UFC debut many years ago, but will have his hands full taking on home fighter Aiemann Zahabi.

Vitor Belfort is in the Hall of Fame

The pioneer well deserving of this honour.

Silva wins by unanimous decision

The Brazilian took the fight 30-27 on all three cards.

Grasso-Silva: Round 3

Silva in command in the final round, landing a clean shots with either hand and opening a cut above Grasso's left eye, possibly from her brutal, precise kicks from range.

Grasso-Silva: Round 2

Grasso stalks Silva throughout and takes some punishment on the way but near the end of the round she connects with swinging strikes with either hand brutal knees.

Grasso-Silva: Round 1

Silva the better in the opener, circling her opponent and landing with kicks and strikes before getting out of range.

Lightweight contenders next

No1-ranked Alexa Grasso takes on Natalia Silva who is fifth in the rankings.

The Main Eventers are in the house!

Saint-Denis wins by submission

After a brief pause due to a thumb in the eye, Saint-Denis launches at his opponent with a purpose landing a left hand and then brutal elbows upstairs and knees to the sternum. As Prepolec looked to escape, the Frenchman brought him to ground and locked in an arm triangle which brought about the tap.

Saint-Denis-Prepolec: Round 1

It was all Saint-Denis as he locked in a hold early in the round and retained grappling advantage to the end of the five minutes when he was on Prepolec's back with a sleeper hold and surely not long form turning the lights out.

Saint-Denis up next

They love a home fighter, but the Montreal crowd will surely also get behind the French 13th-ranked lightweight talent as he looks to get back to winning ways, after two straight defeats, against Kyle Prepolec as the main card begins.

Malott wins by TKO in Round 2

Wow! He came out with a purpose and cracked Radtke with a huge right hand, which may have busted the American's cheekbone, and then a left hook which put him down. After some follow-up, brutal ground and pound and the fight was over.

Malott-Radtke: Round 1

Malott gets a big reaction as the fight starts but he is forced to take some tough blows from Radtke leaving him walking to the corner with a busted nose.

Another Canuck up next...

Welterweight Mike Malott takes on American Charles Radtke which will ratchet the crowd up even more.

Jasudavicius submits Andrade in Round 1

After a competitive opening, Jasudavicius took the Brazilian down 90 seconds into the fight and dominated thereafter. After failing in one attempt at a choke hold she locked in a rear-naked choke soon afterwards, forcing her opponent to tap. A win which gets the Ole's going around the arena.

Home fighter up next...

The Montreal crowd will be loud in support of Jasmine Jasudavicius against Brazilian Jessica Andrade, who at 9 is ranked two spots above her in the featherweight rankings.

Montreal royalty is in the house

Bukauskas wins on points

That's a shock. He is awarded the win by two judges 30-27 and 29-28, with Cutelaba winning the other card 30-27.
"That is trash," says Daniel Cormier on TNT Sports.

Bukauskas-Cutelaba: Round 3

Bukauskas landed the only telling blows in the first four minutes, when the crowd booed due to a lack of action, but in the final moments it was Cutelaba who backed his opponent up with a good flurry - and he'll very likely get the decision.

Bukauskas-Cutelaba: Round 2

Bukauskas only has himself to blame if he loses this fight. He was defensive for most of the round and only just before the buzzer did he spring into action. Most of Cutelaba's shots are not spectacular, save for a good counter as the Lithuanian was loading up on a shot, but his activity gives him the round.

Bukauskas-Cutelaba: Round 1

Bukauskas looks huge in there and he is using all this extra physique into his shots. He is throwing and landing fewer strikes than Cutelaba but they have much more impact when they do connect.

More light-heavyweight action coming up

Modestas Bukauskas takes on Ion Cutelaba.

Stirling wins on points

He takes the fight 29-28, 29-28 and 29-27 on the judges' cards.

Stirling-Erslan: Round 3

Stirling with a huge right hand with two minutes remaining in the round altered the course of the fight. He followed in with brutal elbows leaving a cut under Erslan's right eye. He maybe got too close trying to finish things off, but when back to their feet - and after the Croatian waved his arms to encouraged the fans - the Kiwi with a barrage put his opponent down again. Though the veteran's savvy wares kept him going until the buzzer, the result is surely a formaility.

Stirling-Erslan: Round 2

Stirlng with control for much of the round, getting Erslan's back and having control against the fence. That is not the fight Erslan wants and he will be hoping to be able to keep the fight at range.

Stirling-Erslan: Round 1

Not much in the opener. Erslan landing more strikes, but Stirling getting home with leg kicks which could pay dividends later in the contest.

Light-heavyweights in action first

Unbeaten Kiwi Navajo Stirling (6-0) takes on Croatian Ivan Erslan (14-4-1).
