Screen Hero wins Japan Cup

Long-shot Screen Hero upstaged filly sensation Vodka and bookmakers' favourite Deep Sky for a stunning victory at the Japan Cup.

Screen Hero produced a superb late burst with 200 metres remaining, edging out Deep Sky by half a length with Vodka third over the 2,400-metre Tokyo race.

"It feels fantastic to win," Screen Hero's Italian jockey Mirco Demuro said. "We had a good start and held a good position. Everything went to plan.

"The horse has been great during training so I knew he had the power."

Vodka, who shot to fame last year when she became the first filly in 64 years to win the Japan Derby, was attempting to win a fifth Grade One victory.

Japan's most popular horse produced a stunning win at the Emperor's Cup earlier this month, but Vodka's hopes of a record-tying fifth Grade One win vanished as she tired down the stretch.
