Paris 2024: Tommy Fleetwood tied for first after rip-roaring round, Matt Fitzpatrick and Rory McIlroy trail in 13th

Tommy Fleetwood posted a score of 64 to rocket his way to the top of the leaderboard in the men's golf. The Team GB star is tied first on 11-under after two rounds, alongside Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Xander Schauffele and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama. Team-mate Matt Fitzpatrick has recovered to five-under and is tied 13th alongside Ireland's Rory McIlory.

Great Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood had a day to remember at Le Golf National, posting a score of 64 to rocket his way up the leaderboard from sixth to tied first after two rounds.
The 33-year-old shot a near-perfect round, hitting birdie on six holes and recording an eagle on the third to go into the 18th eight-under and leading by one stroke.
But a miss on a relatively routine putt for par saw him drop to seven-under for the day and 11-under overall with two rounds to play.
The three-time Ryder Cup winner is tied for first with Team USA’s Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Xander Schauffele and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama.
It was also a good day for Team GB's other representative at Paris 2024, Matt Fitzpatrick.
The 2022 US Open winner recovered from a poor first round score of two-over, finding nine shots on his second attempt at Le Golf National’s Albatros course to finish on 64 for the day - the highlight on the 16th where he birdied a hole that he had double-bogeyed just 24 hours earlier.

The 29-year-old now has a combined score of five-under, which is good enough to be tied for 13th - a 36-place improvement from yesterday’s opening round.

The 29-year-old now has a combined score of five-under, which is good enough to be tied for 13th - a 36-place improvement from yesterday’s opening round.
Rory McIlroy is one of the group of six who joins Fitzpatrick in 13th - the Ireland great having another mixed day in his second Olympic Games.
An improvement on his 68 from the first round looked set to be on the cards when the four-time major winner went three-under on the front nine despite a bogey on the 8th.
But he had an inconsistent final nine, relying on a birdie on the 18th to undo some of the damage from a double bogey on the previous hole.
Finishing up on 69, he will need to iron out the mistakes if he’s to medal in Paris and requires two solid back-to-back rounds if he’s to catch Fleetwood and the other leaders.
Round 3 resumes on Saturday from 08:00 UK time.
