Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo have been recalled as Thomas Tuchel announced his England squad on Friday for the team’s friendlies against Uruguay and Japan later this month.
Both Maguire and Mainoo have been beneficiaries of Michael Carrick’s appointment as manager of Manchester United in January, returning to the team having been frozen out by Ruben Amorim.
They have played key roles in United’s hunt for UEFA Champions League qualification, with Maguire providing solidity at the heart of defence and Mainoo adding dynamism in midfield.
Maguire, 33, has not featured in any Tuchel’s Three Lions squads, having been a key contributor under Gareth Southgate.
Mainoo, meanwhile, has started all nine games under Carrick. The 20-year-old has 10 caps to his name but has not featured for England since September 2024 under interim head coach Lee Carsley.
Elsewhere, James Garner has earned his first call-up to the senior squad after excelling under David Moyes at Everton this season.

The 25-year-old has five assists and two goals, and has started every game for Everton this campaign.
Garner’s selection means that Bournemouth’s Alex Scott misses out, while Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace retains his place in the squad.
Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall has also been recalled to the squad following his recent excellent form.
Hall has recently returned from injury and has added dynamism from defence for Eddie Howe’s team.
Hall shone in the first leg of Newcastle’s Champions League last-16 clash against Barcelona, doing an excellent job at keeping Lamine Yamal quiet.

Left-back has been a position of flux under Tuchel, with the German trying multiple different options there. Nico O’Reilly is the most recent to be tried there, while veteran Luke Shaw misses out on this latest squad.
Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has also been called up by Tuchel, having scored 10 goals in the Premier League this season.
Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Jason Steele also received a shock call-up with the FA announcing he could link up with the England squad at the World Cup squad as a training goalkeeper.
Somewhat surprisingly, Tuchel picked a 35-player squad for March's camp, something he says will give him a better look at more players for the World Cup.
”We decided to divide it into basically two camps almost, so we bring players in that we haven’t seen who haven’t played so much to open up the picture, and the competition for plane tickets to the US," he said.
”Then from Friday and Saturday, a group of players will come into camp - 10 or 11 players who get a rest before and we will then go with a new group and mix of players into the match against Japan.”
England will play Uruguay on March 27 and Japan on March 31, with both matches being played at Wembley.
The squad for March’s friendlies is the final one before Tuchel announces the final group who will travel to this summer’s World Cup, which is being played in the US, Canada and Mexico.
