Belgium 1-0 Canada - Michy Batshuayi scores first half goal, Davies has penalty saved by Courtois

A first half goal from Michy Batshuayi hands Belgium a hard-fought 1-0 win over Canada in their World Cup opener. The result means the Red Devils move top of Group F with Croatia and Morocco both tied on one point – following their 0-0 draw earlier on Wednesday - after the opening round of matches.

Canada are tiring and Belgium could well grab a second on the counter-attack. Or simply waste time passing the ball around like they are doing right now.

The cross swung into the box is a poor one and it flies out for a goal kick.

Dendoncker meets a free-kick swung into the box but he nods over the bar. Moments later De Bruyne surges forward and fires a shot on goal, but it's also wide of the mark.

As Belgium break forward Johnston slides into the back of Openda. It was a desperate challenge.

Millar and Osorio are on for Buchanan and Eustaquio.

Johnston's cross into the box is a good one and it finds Larin. He connects but his header is caught by Courtois!

Batshuayi is off and Openda takes his place.

But they appear to be tiring here with Belgium sitting deep and happy to soak up the pressure.

Belgium are sensing opportunities on the counter-attack with Canada committing more men forward in search of an equaliser.

The ball is laid off to Batshuayi on the edge of the Canada box but Laryea slides in before he can get a shot away! The following corner comes to nothing.

Belgium break forward and De Bruyne's pass looking for Batshuayi is excellently intercepted by a sliding Miller.

There appeared to be a challenge on the Everton midfielder but he carried on and ended up losing control of the ball.

The winger gets a shot away but he fires over from close range. It's been the story of the game for Canada. They've created lots of chances but they've lacked the cutting edge to finish them off.

Trossard is on for Hazard.

Meunier has to be careful as he is already on a yellow. Canada have a free kick on the left flank that Eustaquio will take. His ball into the box is too powerful for Johnston and it goes out for a goal kick.

Larin is on for Hoilett while Hutchinson makes way for Kone.

The third yellow card of the game for Belgium is given to Onana after he catches Eustaquio.
