THE FORMATION
Same again, but with very different personnel.
Southgate stuck with the tried-and-tested 3-5-2, keeping faith with the system that had served him so well in the first two matches of Group G.
However, England looked devoid of ideas, creativity or inspiration in midfield and hesistant at the back in a poor showing.
The formation won't change for the last-16 clash with Colombia, but the players most certainly will.
THE VERDICT ON SOUTHGATE
He's taken a huge, huge gamble.
By making eight changes, he effectively gifted Belgium the clear opportunity of winning Group G, which they duly did thanks to Adnan Januzaj's stunning strike.
Now he has to see his side through to the so-called 'easier' quarter-final, otherwise his much-weakened team selection will come back to bite him.
In particular, bringing on Danny Welbeck instead of Harry Kane made his intentions patently clear. Defeat against Colombia now when Japan awaited the group winners would backfire badly on the England boss.
PLAYER RATINGS
Jordan Pickford - 6 Made some routine saves in an unorthodox manner but was well beaten by Januzaj's strike. It wasn't his best display but he remains England's best option between the sticks.
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 7 The teenager has had a fairytale year. Last month he played in a Champions League final and now he has a World Cup appearance under his belt. He was fearless on the night, but will be disappointed with his set pieces overall.
Danny Rose - 6 Struggled when left one on one with Januzaj. He was beaten too easily for the winning goal and didn't do enough to suggest he should be in the side ahead of Young for the Colombia clash.
Phil Jones - 6 Battled well as part of the back three. Not a first choice, but this will give him confidence if he's called upon later in the tournament.
John Stones - 7 Another classy display. Good distribution from the back in a solid first 45 minutes before being substituted.
Gary Cahill - 7 Cleared off the line in the first half and was an occasional threat at the other end from set pieces.
Eric Dier - 6 Made little impact. Neat and tidy but on this evidence Henderson will have no concerns over his starting berth.
Fabian Delph - 6 Industrious and solid but didn't do enough to suggest he can dislodge those who started in midfiedl in the first two group games.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek - 7 Showed flashes of quality without really imposing himself on the game. Maintained a good temperament to avoid a booking that would have ruled him out of the Colombia match.
Marcus Rashford - 6 Offered glimpses of his pace and power - but not enough. Missed a gilt-edged chance to level.
Jamie Vardy - 6 Worked hard but wasn't the nuisance you'd expect. Tried to link with Rashford but was well marshalled by the Belgium backline for the large part.
SUBS
Harry Maguire - 6 A steady second half. Looked composed at the back and will be one of a number to return to the side for the Colombia clash.
Danny Welbeck - N/A - Saw a late chance hacked off the line, but had little time to make a significant impact.
