SCOTLAND BOOK WORLD CUP SPOT IN LATE THRILLER AT HAMPDEN
Scotland scored twice in added time to beat 10-man Denmark 4-2 and confirm their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Scott McTominay scored an audacious overhead kick in the first half, before a late worldie from Kieran Tierney and a sensational strike from the halfway line from Kenny McLean wrapped up a dramatic win.
The home side got off to a dream start after just four minutes, when Napoli midfielder McTominay executed a sensational overhead kick to break the deadlock.
It was not long, though, before Scotland suffered a blow when the lively Ben Doak - who assisted McTominay’s opener - was forced off with a muscle injury after 20 minutes.
Doak’s departure quickly changed the tide, as Scotland struggled to get out of their defensive third for a period as Denmark piled on the pressure. On-loan Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund crashed the ball home from close range, but his effort was quickly ruled out for a push on Aaron Hickey in the build-up.
The trend continued, though, as Denmark continued to lash shots at Craig Gordon’s goal for the remainder of the first half, but they could not hit the target, let alone find the back of the net.
Scotland could not hold on to their lead for much longer following the break, as Hojlund excellently levelled matters from the penalty spot after Andy Robertson fouled Gustav Isaksen just inside the box.
That gave control back to Group C leaders Denmark, who only needed to draw to qualify for next summer’s tournament, but things quickly changed as they were reduced to 10 men on the hour mark when Rasmus Kristensen picked up his second booking.
The hosts took advantage and hit back through substitute Lawrence Shankland, who poked home from a yard out. Once again, though, Denmark levelled when Patrick Dorgu stroked home a low effort minutes later.
But as the game entered added time at the end of the second half and with Denmark hanging on, Tierney curled a sensational effort from outside the box beyond Kasper Schmeichel to lift the roof off Hampden.
Denmark pushed hard for a third equaliser in the dying moments, but were caught off guard when McLean picked up the ball in his own half and unleashed a shot from the halfway line which bounced into the net with Schmeichel well off his line to wrap up victory.
Scotland return to the World Cup for the first time since 1998, while Denmark were left to settle for a play-off.
