Spain 2-2 Turkey - World Cup qualifying reaction as Turkey hold Spain in end-to-end match to ruin their perfect group stage record

Turkey prevented Spain from finishing their World Cup qualifying with a 100% record with an entertaining 2-2 draw in Seville.

Dani Olmo scrambled in Spain's opener and it looked like a routine curtain-closer before Deniz Gul poked in an equaliser from a corner just before half time.

It was the first goal Spain had conceded in qualifying and Turkey threatened to be the first team to beat the hosts in normal time of a competitive match since 2023 when Salih Ozcan timed a volley perfectly to take the lead.

Spain bit back quickly though as Mikel Oyarzabal scrambled in an equaliser after Merih Demiral had cleared Yeremy Pino's shot off the line.

The match remained open for the final half hour, but neither side could find a winner, with Samu Aghehowa coming on for Spain and missing a few headers, while Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir produced some excellent saves to maintain a point for Turkey.

What a wonderful match to finish off Group E! It looked like it would be played out as a glorified friendly in the first half, but the second half certainly caught fire.

Plenty of goals, end-to-end action and the perfect level of spice to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Spain turn their attention to the World Cup now, while Turkey will have to negotiate the play-offs if they want to progress. They will find out their draw on Thursday.

Ferran whips the ball into Aghehowa who has a free header but it is well saved by Bayindir!

This match is getting a bit spicy now! Demiral gets booked after his reaction to a tackle on Celik.

Llorente's cross is blocked and falls to Ferran who has space in the box but fires wide. Soyuncu did well to get out and put him off to be fair.

Goalscorer Ozcan gets a booking for shoving Lopez off the ball. Bit harsh really, Lopez could've stayed on his feet there.

Spain have never lost a World Cup qualifier on home soil. Avoid defeat today, and that stat will continue until 2033 as they are co-hosts for the next edition.

Olmo comes off now for Fermin Lopez.

Yilmaz has no options so goes for goal from the edge of the box and his shot is tipped behind by Simon. After seeing the replay, that was a fantastic save. It may have been his near post but Yilmaz got so much power behind it.

This half has been a cracker, unlike the first half. Gul then tries to counter but is brought down and Alex Baena will take a yellow for that cynical trip.

Gul is now subbed off, as is Kahveci. On come Mert Muldur and Yusuf Sari.

De La Fuente presses on with the changes, subbing off Oyarzabal and Pino for Alejandro Baena and Samu Aghehowa.

Turkey now pour forward again but Aghehowa tracks back well to sort out the danger.

Aghehowa now wins a free kick right on the edge of the box. Aleix Garcia will take, but his ball in is caught by Bayindir.

Turkey are all over Spain right now. Yilmaz tries to take on Llorente, but is dispossessed.

But Spain have an equaliser! Cucurella's cross takes a couple deflections and falls to Pino, but Demiral brilliantly clears the shot off the line!

To his dismay, the ball falls straight to Oyarzabal who taps into the empty net.

Spain haven't lost a competitive match in normal time for two and a half years. They're set to do so now.

If Turkey can find six more goals, they will qualify automatically too!

This match threatened to be a bore-fest but we have a competition now.

What a hit!

Kokcu's corneris cleared, before Turkey rework it. Demiral flashes the ball across the box before Kadioglu's cross is headed away to the edge of the box.

Kokcu then chests it down for Salih Ozcan who thunders a volley into the bottom corner! Unstoppable.

Spain pick up where they left off and knock the ball round Turkey's half before Oyarzabal fails to gather a ball into the box.

Zeki Celik tries to cross for Turkey but Cucurella blocks. This is a good spell from Turkey and Irfan Kahveci cuts inside but scuffs his shot and it is easy for Simon to gather.

Out come the players and Spain have made a change. Barcelona winger Ferran Torres is on for Mikel Merino.
