Wayne Shaw, Sutton United’s 46-year-old, 23-stone reserve goalkeeper, delighted football fans on Monday night when he scoffed a pie in the dugout during the FA Cup tie with Arsenal.

Social media lapped up the goalkeeper’s antics, which followed on from him hoovering the dugout prior to the game and heading to the bar at half-time.
But Shaw’s stunt grabbed the attention of the back pages more than Sutton’s impressive performance against their Premier League visitors, and that was something that manager Paul Doswell did not appreciate.
I think Wayne has become this global superstar on the back of being 23 stone. He’s made that a chance to make some more media coverage off the back of it. I don’t think it shows us in the best light.
Doswell was unable to confirm that Shaw’s mid-game meal was a betting stunt, saying: “The reality is I don’t know, but it wouldn’t surprise me.”
But the player himself seemed to confirm as much with some post-game comments.
A few of the lads said to me earlier on: 'What is going on with the 8-1 about eating a pie? I said: 'I don't know, I've eaten nothing all day, so I might give it a go later on.' As I say, Sun Bets had us at 8-1 to eat a pie. I thought I would give them a bit of banter and let's do it. All the subs were on and we were 2-0 down.
I think there were a few people. Obviously we [Sutton's players] are not allowed to bet. I think a few of the mates and a few of the fans. It was just a bit of banter for them. It is something to make the occasion as well and you can look back and say it was part of it and we got our ticket money back.
And by the looks of Sun Bets’ social medial activity, they were only too happy to accept the losses for the extra publicity.
Unfortunately for non-league Shaw, his behaviour and post-game quotes are likely to land him in hot water with the game’s governing body, as his actions appear to contravene FA guidelines over player involvement with betting activity.
And it got worse for Shaw on Tuesday morning, as he appeared alongside Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain.
