Michelle Agyemang's debut England goal not enough to prevent Belgium victory in Nations League, Spain go top of group after beating Portugal

England defeated Belgium 5-0 in their UEFA Women’s Nations League tie at home on Friday, but the reverse fixture in Leuven produced a very different result. The home side took a 3-0 lead in the first half before Beth Mead's penalty reduced the deficit ahead of the interval. After the restart, England gave Michelle Agyemang her international debut, but could not prevent a 3-2 loss.

England suffered a 3-2 defeat, despite a debut Michelle Agyemang stunner, as they lost to Belgium in the UEFA Women’s Nations League on Tuesday evening.
The two teams had met at Ashton Gate on Friday, with Sarina Wiegman’s team claiming a dominant 5-0 victory, but the return fixture in League A, Group 3 went the other way.
The visitors conceded three goals in the first half, with striker Tessa Wullaert’s brace coming either side of a header from Justin Vanhaevermaet.
England gave themselves hope before the end of the first period when Davina Philtjens fouled Beth Mead in the penalty area, with the Arsenal forward then converting the spot-kick.
As England chased the game, Brighton & Hove Albion’s 19-year-old striker Agyemang - on loan from WSL giants Arsenal - was brought on for her international debut.
England were suffering from a mini-injury crisis before the match, which led to Ageymang getting her chance.
Agyemang had been in action for England under-19s on Saturday, scoring against Austria, and she stepped in to replace the injured Alessia Russo, her Arsenal team-mate. Lauren James and Chloe Kelly were also out with fitness concerns.
Shortly after coming on, she struck in the 81st minute with an outstanding control and volley, but it was too little, too late.
England return to international action at the end of May when they face Portugal at home in the Nations League, with the following fixture an away encounter against World Cup holders Spain.
Spain defeated Portugal 7-1 on Tuesday night to go top of England’s group, with The Lionesses dropping to second spot.
