Hungary 1-1 Netherlands: UEFA Nations League result as Virgil van Dijk is sent off in dramatic draw

Virgil van Dijk was sent off as Denzel Dumfries rescued a point for the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League as they drew 1-1 with Hungary at the Puskas Arena on Friday.

In an even opening 20 minutes, Hungary came closest to breaking the deadlock when Roland Sallai struck the post from Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner, but it did not take much longer for the home side to draw first blood.

A threatening attack followed just after the half-hour mark, which saw Zsolt Nagy dink a wonderful cross from the left to the unmarked Sallai, who made no mistake as he poked a careful volley beyond Bart Verbruggen at the back post.

The visitors had a great chance to level the score when they were gifted an in-direct free-kick inside the penalty area after a mix-up between the Hungary goalkeeper and Szoboszlai, but Denes Dibusz made amends for his lapse in concentration when he saved Cody Gakpo’s effort and clung onto the ball in a busy six-yard area.

The Netherlands pushed for an equaliser for much of the second half and came close through efforts from Stefan de Vrij and Tijjani Reijnders, but Hungary held firm as they looked to seal their first-ever win over their Dutch opponents.

Liverpool’s Van Dijk received two yellow cards in as many minutes and was sent off as they visitors were reduced to 10 players, but just minutes later they found an equaliser as Dumfries headed home from a Gakpo cross.

With not much time left to find a late winner, the match ended all square in Budapest.

What a game that was, a thoroughly enjoyable encounter which ends all square - probably the fair result!

We're late into added time now but Hungary have a free-kick. The Liverpool man stands over it - surely the last chance of the match - and sends it well over the bar!

Dumfries takes over the armband from Van Dijk, and instantly pulls his side level as he heads home from another wonderful Gakpo delivery!

Just minutes after receiving his first caution, the Liverpool defender fouls Kevin Csoboth as he makes a run down the left wing and is given his second booking!

The Netherlands are now not only a goal down, but a player down as well!

The Netherlands take the free-kick but it's cleared. The away side recycle the ball and Brobbey heads an effort wide from another decent cross.

he drives forward and wins a free-kick on the edge of the box as Fiola is booked. Another big chance for the Netherlands.

Guus Til and Brian Brobbey are also introduced as Timber and Zirkzee depart along with De Vrij.

Gakpo looks for Dumfries with a beautiful, curling cross, but Dibusz comes out to deliver a super punch clear and the danger is dealt with once more.

Varga goes down injured following a challenge from Timber but the Netherlands play on.

The ball is eventually rolled into the arms of Dibusz, but the home fans are not happy with that!

The Man Utd forward picks up possession in the box, but can hardly get a shot away for the number of red shirts surrounding him. That's been the story for much of the second half.

So far, so good for Hungary, who are putting in a real defence shift to maintain their lead.
