The Catalan side, whose confidence appears to have returned since Radomir Antic took over as coach at the end of last month, are on the brink of booking a place in the quarter-finals after crushing Inter 3-0 at the Nou Camp last week.
"If we go there with the aim of drawing the match you can guarantee that things will go badly," Puyol told a news conference on Tuesday. "A draw wouldn't be a bad result, but we must go into the game looking for a win."
The Spain defender added that the team had to make sure they did not get carried away by their apparent return to form. "The players need to distance themselves from what is being said about our recent form because at Barca we go from depression to euphoria in one step."
Barcelona set a record of 11 successive Champions League victories with last week's win over Inter and have moved up to eighth place in the Spanish first division after comprehensive victories over Espanyol and Real Betis. But Puyol believes his side can take nothing for granted when they play the return against Inter, who are joint top of Serie A with Juventus.
"We can't afford to be over-confident," he said. "We have won three matches in a row, but achieved nothing more than that. Inter are one of the best sides in Europe and they will be keen to avenge their defeat at the Nou Camp."
Barcelona lead Group A with a maximum nine points from three matches, Inter are second on six and Newcastle United follow on three. Last season's losing Champions League finalists Bayer Leverkusen are bottom of the group having failed to earn a point from any of their second phase games.
