But coach Winifred Schäfer warned Mboma could not rely on past glories to ensure a place in the squad when the tournament kicks off on January 24th.
Schäfer said: "After a great deal of reflection, we have decided to call up Patrick Mboma. But he's going to have to prove that he is still capable of playing at this level to gain a place in the final squad."
Mboma - currently plying his trade in the Japanese first division with Tokyo Verdy - was left out of Cameroon's squad for last summer's Confederations Cup and announced his international retirement after falling out with Schäfer, but was recalled for a recent friendly against Japan.
Cameroon begin the defence of their African Nations Cup title against Algeria on January 25.
