Thursday’s Paper Round leads on Manchester United, who are discussing the prospect of signing strikers Ivan Toney and Dominic Calvert-Lewin after agreeing a deal to sell Mason Greenwood to Marseille. Toney could cost £60m, but Brentford may yet accept £40m. Elsewhere, Aston Villa are hoping to re-sign a winger they sold last year, while Aston Villa look to re-sign Jaden Philogene from Hull City.

Manchester United are considering both Ivan Toney and Dominic Calvert-Lewin as striker options to sign this summer, The Athletic reports. Brentford could demand around £60m for 28-year-old England international Toney, although there is a belief £40m yet be enough.
Everton would be open to selling Calvert-Lewin for less, with £30m possible. Both players have a year left on their current contracts.
The Athletic adds: “Calvert-Lewin’s injury record is a consideration, but United figures have noted he featured in 38 games last season, playing 18 more minutes than Hojlund in the Premier League overall, and scored seven goals.
“United are also looking for a left-sided defender who could provide cover for Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw given their injury issues last season, with Tyrell Malacia still working his way back to fitness, too.
“Feyenoord’s David Hancko, 26, who can operate at centre-back or full-back, has been considered, but he may prove too expensive for someone likely to be a squad player.
“As well as up front and at centre-back, United would ideally like to strengthen in central midfield and are considering Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte, but loan options are also being seriously contemplated.”

Marseille close to Greenwood transfer

Manchester United are closer to selling Mason Greenwood after agreeing a £26.7m offer from Marseille for the forward, the Guardian reports. Terms are being finalised on the transfer, with United wanting a sell-on clause worth 40 to 50 per cent of any future fee.
The Guardian adds: “Greenwood last played for United in January 2022 and has a contract that runs until 2025, with the club having the option to extend for a further year.
“He was loaned to Getafe last season, scoring 10 goals in 36 appearances and providing six assists. Greenwood has returned to England and is thought to be training in the Manchester area away from the club."

Ipswich bid for Philogene triggers Villa buy-back clause

Aston Villa will look to re-sign Jaden Philogene from Hull City after Ipswich made a bid for the winger, the Telegraph reports. Villa are hoping to finalise the sale of Philippe Coutinho, and that would free up funds to bring Philogene back to Villa Park.
Villa had a buy-back clause when selling Philogene to Hull last summer, and that has been activated following Ipswich’s attempts to sign the player.
The Telegraph adds: “Ipswich, the Championship runners-up, have made an £18 million bid to sign Philogene and Villa have now triggered the option to sign him back.
“Philogene is understood to have already agreed salary terms and contract length with Villa in the deal when he departed.
“The 22-year-old was one of the stars of the Championship last season, scoring 12 goals in 32 games for Hull as the club fell just short of the play-off places.
“Ipswich, Everton and Crystal Palace have all targeted the former Villa academy player but he looks destined to rejoin Unai Emery’s squad unless either of the three clubs make a higher offer.”
