Carsley to step in for England
England are looking for an interim appointment for their upcoming UEFA Nations League games, which begin in September.
The Sun believes England under-21 manager Lee Carsley is the obvious choice to take over on a temporary basis.
The paper writes: “Lee Carsley is in pole position to take over as interim England boss after Gareth Southgate's exit following Euro 2024, SunSport understands.
“The former Everton star, who is currently in charge of the U21 side, is expected to lead the Three Lions into their Nations League campaign which starts in September.
“FA bosses are big fans of Newcastle manager Eddie Howe but feel Carsley is best placed to take over for the next match against the Republic of Ireland.
“A move for Carsley would mirror the appointment of Southgate in 2016 who was promoted from U21s boss to England manager - also initially on an interim basis.”
Newcastle to resist England interest in Howe
Eddie Howe has been linked to the England job after Gareth Southgate’s departure, with the bookmakers making him one of the favourites.
However, The Telegraph reports that Newcastle are keen to keep hold of the manager after two successful seasons.
The paper states: “Newcastle will fight any attempt by England to lure Eddie Howe as Gareth Southgate’s successor after it emerged he signed a secret contract extension last summer that did not include a set release clause.
“Howe is scheduled to speak to the media from the team’s pre-season training camp in Germany later this week and Newcastle chief executive Darren Eales has expressed his confidence the 46-year-old, who is the bookmakers’ favourite and a popular choice with pundits to replace Southgate, is not going anywhere.
“Eales also revealed Howe signed a new long-term contract in secret last summer and there is no set compensation fee in that deal which would enable the FA to trigger a release clause. That significantly strengthens Newcastle’s hand, unless Howe changes his mind and asks to go if the FA makes an approach.”
MAN UTD wait on Yoro
Manchester United are waiting on Lille defender Leny Yoro after making a bid for the 18-year-old defender.
Yoro would prefer to sign for Real Madrid, but they are yet to make an offer for the youngster.
The Mirror explains: “Teenage sensation Leny Yoro is holding out for a dream transfer to Real Madrid despite an offer from Manchester United.
“The 18-year-old centre-back broke into Lille's first-team during the 2022/23 season and went on to make 44 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit last term, alerting a host of top European clubs to his prodigious talents.
“Real Madrid are avid admirers of Yoro, as are United - but only the latter have lodged an official bid with Lille to sign the youngster this summer.”
West Ham keen on Sorloth
West Ham hope to sign Alexander Sorloth from Villarreal, but are yet to agree a fee for the striker.
The Premier League side have discussed a figure of £25 million for the forward, but the Spanish team are hoping for £7m more.
The Mail reports: “West Ham have made further enquiries for Villarreal striker Alexander Sorloth but the Spanish side are holding out for £32 million.
“That is the value of the buy-out clause in his current contract.
“The 28-year-old former Crystal Palace forward had a standout campaign with Villarreal last season, scoring 26 goals in 41 games.
“West Ham have discussed an offer worth £25m but Villarreal are demanding more.
“The Norway international also has interest from Roma.”
