Shaw resigns from Sutton United over pie-eating controversy

Shaw, the reserve team keeper at Sutton, made headlines on Monday evening when he was caught on BBC TV eating a pie during the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup last 16.

Speaking on Sky News, Doswell confirmed that Shaw's resignation had been asked for after the FA decided to investigate the matter, as it was in conjunction with an offer from a betting site, and the keeper had submitted it.

The 46-year-old, who is 23 stones, had been doing the rounds in the media and on social media ahead of the game and a bookmaker who had agreed a short-term sponsorship of Sutton were quoting odds of 8/1 that he would eat a pie during the game on camera.

It subsequently happened, and Shaw explained the scenario after the game saying;

Doswell had already condemned Shaw after the game.

“I think Wayne has become this global superstar on the back of being 23 stone," he said.

"He’s made that a chance to make some more media coverage off the back of it, the reality is I don’t know (if Shaw did it for a bet) but it wouldn’t surprise me. I don’t think it shows us in the best light.”

A spokesman for the FA said: “We are investigating to establish whether there has been any breach of The FA rules relating to betting.”

Richard Watson, Gambling Commission enforcement and intelligence director, told AP:

"Integrity in sport is not a joke and we have opened an investigation to establish exactly what happened," said Shaw.

"As part of that we’ll be looking into any irregularity in the betting market, and establishing whether the operator has met its licence requirement to conduct its business with integrity."
