MARTINEZ SCORES STUNNER AS INTER GO TOP OF SERIE A AHEAD OF INTERNATIONAL BREAK

Lautaro Martinez scored in stunning fashion as Internazionale moved top of the Serie A standings ahead of the international break thanks to a 2-0 win against Lazio at San Siro.

Lazio went into the game unbeaten in their last six games but slipped to defeat in a dominant performance by Cristian Chivu’s men, who capitalised on AC Milan’s slip-up in the title race against relegation-threatened Parma.

It took just three minutes for Inter to take the lead through in-form Martinez as Inter’s forward curved a beautiful shot into the top-right corner after good work from Alessandro Bastoni to dispossess Lazio deep into their half.

Inter would continue to pile on the pressure as Lautaro saw a header go over the crossbar and Ange-Yoan Bonny hit the side-netting.

Lazio captain Mattia Zaccagni would see an effort soar over the crossbar after playing through Inter’s midfield to set up a shot from the outside of the box, but it would be Petar Sucic for the hosts who would come the closest to adding to the goal tally, when his volley went wide of a post inside 25 minutes.

Martinez should have doubled Inter’s lead after 60 minutes when Nicolo Barella played the Argentina forward in before he scooped his effort way off target.

But it would be Bonny who would put the game out of reach for the hosts shortly after when a beautiful ball to the left-hand side from Barella found Martinez, who in-turn found Federico Dimarco to set up Bonny for an easy tap in.

The hosts thought they had killed the game off when substitute Piotr Zielinski fired home from the edge of the box just five minutes later – only for it to be ruled out for a foul in the build-up of the goal.

Lazio would grow into the game a little too late as Pedro, who scored a brace in the last meeting between the sides to end Inter’s title hopes, saw his effort go wide of the post before he set up the best opportunity for the visitors, when his free-kick found Mario Gila, whose header rattled the crossbar before bouncing on the goal-line and into the hands of goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Inter head into the international break top of Serie A on goal difference and will face title challengers and local rivals AC on their return. Lazio see their six-game unbeaten run come to an end but will look to bounce back to winning ways when they take on Lecce in two weeks’ time.
