Inter 0-1 AC Milan - Serie A result as Christian Pulisic tap-in and Mike Maignan penalty save help Milan win derby and go second

Christian Pulisic's second-half goal and Mike Maignan's penalty save helped AC Milan to a 1-0 win over city rivals Inter to move second in Serie A.

Inter were chasing a victory which would have sent them top and started positively, but failed to create any clear-cut chances.

In a half of few opportunities, Inter came closest when Francesco Acerbi's header clipped the post in between two excellent Maignan saves to deny Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez.

Having weathered the first-half storm, Milan struck on the counter 10 minutes into the second half when Yann Sommer fumbled Alexis Saelmaeker's shot straight into the path of Pulisic, who tapped into the empty net.

Inter looked to respond immediately and amped up the pressure, before Thuram won a penalty with 15 minutes remaining after he was caught on the foot by Strahinja Pavlovic.

Hakan Calhanoglu stepped up to take it, but Maignan dived to his right to preserve Milan's lead.

Inter huffed and puffed, but could not get close to scoring, allowing Milan to take the spoils in the derby and extend their unbeaten streak against Inter to six matches.

Who else?

Mike Maignan was already in the conversation for the award thanks to two strong first-half saves to keep Milan in the contest.

But his crowning moment came with 15 minutes to go as he got down to save Hakan Calhanoglu's penalty and guarantee all three points for his side.

Bastoni launches it in. Thuram tries to take the ball under control but it bounces up and strikes his arm and Milan are nearly there.

Maignan will launch this as far away as possible. And there is the full-time whistle!

Milan have produced a clinical smash-and-grab display to win the derby and go second!

Zielinski's cross is deflected but it doesn't quite fall for Thuram. Pavlovic then heads the second cross clear.

Loftus-Cheek now wins the ball back and runs to the corner. However, he obstructs the ball and gives away a free-kick.

Another Inter corner with just 90 seconds left. It is now or never.

Milan get it away.

Ardon Jashari is set to come on for Milan. Inter want a corner but the referee gives a goal kick.

Five minutes of added time.

Inter still just passing it around the area.

Milan are nearly there. This would be very smash-and-grab but at the same time, they have nullified Inter's attack which has scored the most Serie A goals this season.

Diouf rolls it across to Bonny who has acres of space on the edge of the box, but the ball takes a bobble and he skies it! What a chance.

Inter work it around outside Milan's area before Barella swings the ball in but Maignan comfortably claims it.

Two more changes for Inter and they are attacking ones. Acerbi and Barella come off and on come Andy Diouf and Francesco Pio Esposito.

Cristian Chivu has made some bold choices with his changes. Inter's best players are all now off the pitch.

Leao now comes off for Milan and he is replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Inter's wretched record in the derby is set to continue unless they can find something in the final 10 minutes.

Barring that penalty, Milan have looked pretty comfortable. They have to defend another corner though.

Acerbi flicks it on and Akanji is at the far post but he can't get it under control.

That's such a good save from Maignan. He gets his right hand down so quickly to prevent the ball from squirming under him and he is having an absolute blinder tonight.

Sucic wins a corner now. Inter are desperate to make amends. But Tomori rises highest to head clear.

Milan ring in the changes now. Fofana and Pulisic come off and are replaced by Christopher Nkunku and Samuele Ricci.

Calhanoglu is also brought off and is replaced by Piotr Zielenski.

It will be Calhanoglu to take. He has an excellent record from the spot. He has only missed one in his inter career.

A little stutter, and it is saved by Maignan who dives to his right and gets a strong hand to it!

Thuram twists clear but his cross is overhit. He's stayed down after that cross. Eventually Inter put it down and Thuram looks like he is in a lot of pain.

Replays show Pavlovic catches him with his studs in the follow-through. Painful, but he should be good to continue.

Hang on! VAR are taking a look and the referee has been set over to the monitor.

There's definitely contact. And it's been given!

Bastoni puts a cross in now but Martinez can't quite get there this time. Inter will now make a change and surprisingly it is Martinez who is coming off for Ange-Yoan Bonny.

The crowd are not happy with Martinez being subbed off. Maybe the yellow had something to do with it.

Saelemaekers then dinks in a cross but Manuel Akanji heads it away from Leao.

Augusto drifts into the box now and wants a corner, but won't get one. Martinez goes screaming at the referee, and picks up a booking for that.

Inter are now camped inside Milan's half. They have plenty of time but the match feels like it's in the final 10 minutes.

Well then, will that open up the match? Questions have to be asked about Sommer there, who should have pushed the ball to safety.

Milan have their tails up and have an overload as they counter. But they can't find the right pass to finish off the move.

Now Inter come forward! Thuram pulls it back to Bastoni who blazes over from inside the box.

And it is AC Milan with the opener against the run of play!

Fofana brings it forward and the red and black shirts are pouring forward. Saelemaekers drives a shot from the edge of the box, but Yann Sommer parries it away.

However, he can only push it into the path of Pulisic, who taps into an empty net!

Inter are really knocking on the door now. Augusto gets space and wins a corner as Milan's defence gets stretched.

Dimarco's delivery is flicked on dangerously but fortunately for Milan, a red and black shirt gets the first header onto it and they scramble it away.

Once again, Milan can't get out of their half. Thuram cuts inside and bends one but it is straight at Maignan.

Again, Inter start the half on the front foot. Martinez chases a ball over the top but Pavlovic deals with the danger. He has been in excellent form all season and is certainly a name to watch.

Calhanoglu scythes through the entire Milan back line with a piercing pass to Dimarco but the Italian can't find anyone but Maignan with his cross.

Inter have 45 minutes to find a goal that would send them top. Let's hope for something more entertaining this half.

No changes for either side at the break. Milan get the second half up and running.

Inter have certainly shown more desire to push for a win so far in this contest, perhaps spurred on by the treat of ending the weekend top should they take all three points.

They have hit the post and forced two good saves out of Maignan but they haven't done enough to deserve a lead.

As for Milan, they wouldn't mind a draw but pose a threat on the counter nonetheless.
