Mihajlovic becomes Milan's new coach on a two-year contract worth around €2.5 million per season.
Inzaghi is sorting out a compensation package on a contract that has another year to run.
“AC Milan communicates that it has fired the first team coach, Filippo Inzaghi, who the club thanks for all his work," said a statement from Milan.
"Don't worry, within the next 15 days I will be Milan's new coach," Mihajlovic was quoted as telling L'Equipe on Monday, and now his appointment has been confirmed by the club.
Mihajlovic will be charged with restoring the seven-times European champions Milan to full health after a season in which they finished 10th in Serie A and failed to qualify for Europe.
Thai businessman Bee Taechaubol is set to take on a controlling interest of the club from Silvio Berlusconi.
OUR VIEW
Not a huge surprise to see Milan dispense with Inzaghi. His season running the club has been fairly lamentable with Milan winning fewer league matches than any Rossoneri team in the past 14 years. Inzaghi has been at Milan during that spell as a player and coach. It is a sad end to see such a starry association, but it is difficult to argue that the outcome was not right. Whether or not Mihajlovic is the right man to bring a sense of normality to the San Siro is a moot point.
