Francesco Totti's strike 23 minutes into the second half had looked like giving the Giallorossi three precious points - and beleaguered boss Luciano Spalletti a real shot in the arm.
But a dangerous cross into the penalty area in the second minute of time added on was headed into his own goal by the Brazilian full-back to leave Roma in real danger of ending the weekend in the bottom three.
Should Chievo manage to beat Juventus at home on Sunday, that situation - unthinkable before the season started - will become a bleak reality and further raise doubts over Spalletti's future with the club.
The Giallorossi's domestic form has been dire so far this season; the capital club have now won just two of their opening 10 league fixtures, and despite a morale-boosting Champions League win over Chelsea in midweek, the calls for Spalletti's head are almost certain to increase in volume.
In an evenly-balanced and tense game, both sides put nervy performances that lacked fluency - hardly surprising, given their lowly positions in the league.
The deadlock was not broken until 23 minutes into the second half, World Cup winner Totti showing a moment of magic to put his side ahead.
Roma's talismanic captain feigned to shoot, only to control the ball instead, taking it past his marker in one deft movement before firing in off Bologna keeper Francesco Antonioli.
But his team-mate Cicinho was to undo all his good work as he fired a bullet header past Artur - a second half replacement for Doni, who was taken to hospital after sustaining a head wound in a collision with Massimo Marazzina - when attempting to deal with Marco Di Vaio's cross.
In Saturday's other game, Juergen Saeumel netted in the 89th minute to give Torino a much-needed 1-0 win over 10-man Palermo , who had Antonio Nocerino sent off with seven minutes remaining.
