The Giallorossi finished second last season in the most one-sided Scudetto in recent history, with Milan coming fourth behind Lazio on account of an eight point deduction for the Rossoneri's involvement in the Calciopoli affair.
And even though they would only have finished third without the penalty, Spalletti thinks Milan will go toe-to-toe with their city rivals in the 2007/8 campaign.
"I think next year will be a race between Inter and Milan," Spalletti declared. "Behind them you have us, Juventus, Fiorentina, Lazio and Palermo.
"Juventus have done excellently in the transfer market, but they're not close to competing for the Scudetto yet," he added of the Serie B champions.
Meanwhile, Roma are turning their heads to Reggina winger Francesco Modesto after failing to land Julien Faubert, who joined West Ham at the weekend.
"At the moment we're lacking wingers and we need three of them," Spalletti said.
"Francesco Modesto, Mauro Esposito [who has been signed in a part-ownership deal with Cagliari] and Julien Faubert were our targets, but our director of sport deals with that."
Roma have already signed Marco Cassetti, Juan, Mirko Vucinic and David Pizarro on permanent deals, while Ahmed Barusso is poised to join from Rimini today.
