Why Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos picked shirt No. 93 at new club Monterrey after transfer from Sevilla
Sergio Ramos has worn the No. 4 at every club since signing for Real Madrid as a 19-year-old, but the four-time UEFA Champions League winner has plumped for No. 93 at new club Monterrey. Since leaving Sevilla in the summer, Ramos found offers for his services unconvincing until the Liga MX club made a move. The 38-year-old will link up with ex-Sevilla team-mates Lucas Ocampos and Oliver Torres.

Sergio Ramos has given up his usual squad number in favour of an extra-special No. 93 at his new club, Monterrey.
The Real Madrid legend will be based on a continent other than Europe for the first time in his career, having left his hometown club of Sevilla in June 2024.
The 38-year-old has officially signed for the five-time CONCACAF Champions League winners from Mexico, opting for the No. 93 on the back of his jersey.
Aside from his first spell at Sevilla, where he wore No. 35, No. 32 and No. 5, Ramos opted to be emblazoned with No. 4 at every club thereafter, including in each of his 16 seasons at Real Madrid, as well as his two years at Paris Saint-Germain.
Centre-half Victor Guzman currently occupies the No. 4 berth at Monterrey, who are managed by Martin Demichelis and also count Ramos’ former Sevilla team-mates Lucas Ocampos and Oliver Torres in their ranks.
But Ramos has selected the No. 93 in honour of his iconic 93rd-minute equaliser against Atletico Madrid in the 2014 UEFA Champions League final.
"I’ve had the chance to experience unique moments and one of those was the final against Atletico de Madrid, which was an added source of motivation in itself, because they are our city rivals, and there’s a bit more rivalry than just on the sporting side," Ramos told UEFA before Real Madrid’s 2016 Champions League final victory, also against Atletico.
"It was an incredible moment. I remember it with a smile, obviously. I think that at the end of the day that’ll be the lasting memory. I’m going to be able to show it to my son, my grandchildren.
"And there’s the satisfaction that comes from the fact that Real Madrid are a club at which you have to fight to the very end."

The defender’s trademark bullet header rescued his side from a fourth Champions League runners-up medal and denied Atletico their first title.
Extra-time strikes from Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo eventually secured a stunning 4-1 win over their city rivals.
Ramos went on to win four UEFA Champions League trophies with Los Blancos, scoring the opening goal against Atletico in the 2016 edition, which Real Madrid won on penalties.

Monterrey president Jose Antonio Noriega noted that Ramos had the opportunity to join other clubs, but was unconvinced by their offers.
"It is a source of pride for Monterrey to be able to count on a player of his calibre. We feel delighted knowing that Sergio had offers from several parts of the world," said Noriega.
"He mentioned that his period of inactivity was due to him not having found an offer that convinced him, despite having many options. Therefore, we are thrilled that our proposal and goals have inspired him to join us.
"The most important factor will be what he can deliver on the pitch, but we also anticipate the media impact and joy Sergio will bring to the fans."
