Sterling went on record with the corporation in a bid to try and end speculation about his future and assure Liverpool fans that financial concerns did not lay behind his refusal to sign a new contract.
But instead, Sterling has come under fire for dredging up his contract issue just days before a key match against Arsenal in an interview which is said to have 'infuriated' his employers.
But how have Liverpool fans reacted to Sterling's decision to plead his case on the BBC?
Note: We had to exclude plenty of tweets on grounds of good taste. That and we might have broken the '*' button trying to censor them all.
Sterling has huge potential but at the minute he lacks a consistent end product. Sign a new deal or move on. He is massively overrated. #LFC— Dave Berry (@daveberry_lfc) April 1, 2015
It was good while it lasted, now piss of Sterling. I know Jordon Ibe will step up as our new hero. Out with the old,in with the new! #LFC— rayotelli (@Rayyyshouse) April 1, 2015
I wouldn't play sterling again this season. Give the players who want to be at the club the chance. His heart obviously isn't in it #LFC— SabreOfTruth (@SabreOfTruth) April 1, 2015
Raheem Sterling is full of himself for what? Wish we just sell him. Don't think we can cry over losing him. He'll influence young*s badly— Sphamandla (@sphanombika) April 2, 2015
If Sterling has done that interview unsanctioned then his days at #LFC are over. May as well sell him now #moneygrabbingteenager— Ty Kropp (@tizlad) April 1, 2015
Please sell sterling to someone for 30 million and get a real player. #LFC— Kevin Connor (@KevinConnor1) April 1, 2015
Sick of seeing Sterling all over my news feed hope we sell him to a big club and he can just be a bench warmer— Thumper (@dannydavies20) April 2, 2015
Even if Sterling isn't a money grabber, he is no way near good enough to be making any sort of demands. Zero end product. #LFC— Jack Waite (@JackWaite13) April 1, 2015
A persistent criticism of Sterling appears to be that he lacks a final product. But this tweet from Sky Sports would suggest otherwise.
Raheem Sterling insists he is NOT a money-grabbing 20-year-old. This is how he's done with #LFC this season #SSNHQpic.twitter.com/acknLtQ4Ku— Sky Sports News HQ (@SkySportsNewsHQ) April 1, 2015
There were plenty of people backing Sterling, though.
If your boss offered you a pay rise but you knew you could get more, you'd do the same as Sterling.Don't blame him at all. 💷 #raheemsterling— Hayden Kirby (@HaydenKirby14) April 2, 2015
After the way Rodgers wasted the Suarez money I don't blame #Sterling for looking elsewhere. #LFC— Southern Softie (@SSoftie) April 2, 2015
Just watched the interview with Raheem Sterling. He clearly doesn't see Liverpool as a trophy winning team...I think he's right. #sterling— Joel McGowan (@joelyymcgowan) April 2, 2015
As much as I want Sterling to stay at @LFC, he has the right to charge as much as the market deems he is worth for his services, if he wants— Leon Bell (@TweetsByLeon) April 2, 2015
I'm sure Sterling can't believe after his impressive form, Balo still earns more than him on his new contract. The lad is right.— 23. (@Dada_Jnr) April 2, 2015
Sterling that interview was correct and professional— arnaud pepin (@arnaudpepin) April 1, 2015
