The 18-year-old revealed he has been tracked by Pompey for some time, although he ultimately could not justify taking time out from his studies to show off his talents to Harry Redknapp.
"I found out that they [Portsmouth] have been watching me for six months," the Norwegian Young player of the Year told Aftenposten.
"I turned down Norway Under-21s because I had to catch up with my homework, so I didn't feel it was right to go to Portsmouth when I had turned down Norway."
The Fredrikstad striker was also forced to turn down the offer of a trial at Premiership champions Chelsea, but Elyounoussi is still holding out hope he will be given a second chance.
"I might go to England in January, and I hope I can visit both Portsmouth and Chelsea."
