"I had 18 months left on my contract at Manchester City and was in the team at the time, so it did come as a bit of a shock when Stuart Pearce called me and said they had agreed a fee with Charlton.
"I knew the position the club was in - but we are by no means dead and buried and have a good fighting chance.
"Since Alan Pardew took over the results have been better, and it just appealed to me to be part of it and try to pull off the escape."
The Welsh international was Alan Pardew's first signing for the club and has since made four appearances for the London club.
The Addicks will be drawing on his experience for Saturday's game at Old Trafford against league-leaders Manchester United.
