Sheringham came on for Dean Ashton at half-time and almost wrote the headlines when he rammed home Anton Ferdinand's flick-on from a Matthew Etherington corner with six minutes remaining. But Charlton's third-choice 'keeper Thomas Myhre somehow parried on the line and Charlton survived.
West Ham had the lion's share of the chances, with Myhre saving from Ashton and Marlon Harewood while Radostin Kishishev blocked a Bobby Zamora bullet-header on the line.
Chris Perry and Kishishev also made last-gasp tackles for Charlton, who were well organised and battled for every ball but created little in the way of goalscoring chances. Their best effort fell to Bryan Hughes, who was inches away from diverting a corner beyond Shaka Hislop in the second half.
West Ham had another great chance to win the match, with Yossi Benayoun heading over from a corner in injury-time, but Charlton survived to share the spoils.
West Ham boss Alan Pardew was frustrated with the result and officiating, having been warned for remonstrating with referee Rob Styles in the first half.
"I hate 0-0's, for the club, for the fans, " Pardew said. "Sometimes you need a bit of luck and we didn't get that today,
"I was disappointed with the way the game was run. I thought (the officials) could have helped us a bit, letting the game flow... and when I told (Styles) what I thought he made a big deal of it.
"I'll be speaking to him afterwards, nicely of course as they fines are pretty high in this league"
West Ham midfielder Hayden Mullins denied that their FA Cup semi-final against either Charlton or Middlesbrough was a distraction for the Hammers:
"The FA Cup is in the back of our minds at the moment and we're trying to keep it there.
"It would be nice for us to get into Europe, that's our main aim this season and anything in the cup would be a bonus".
The draw sees West Ham climb one place to eighth, although ninth placed Wigan play on Monday. Charlton are yet to win away from home this season and stay 11th.
