Ruben Amorim: Manchester United boss reflects on frustrations after League Cup humiliation - 'Sometimes I want to quit'

Ruben Amorim has admitted that he "sometimes wants to quit" his position as Manchester United manager. The 40-year-old said he felt this way on Wednesday after his side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by fourth-tier side Grimsby Town. Amorim delivered a number of emotional post-match interviews midweek and said today he is always "going to be like that", despite being told to "be more calm".

The Portuguese has struggled since arriving at Old Trafford in November and has by far the lowest win percentage of any permanent United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson.

His tenure reached arguably its lowest point on Wednesday, as United were knocked out of the second round of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Grimsby Town on penalties.

Speaking ahead of United’s clash with Burnley on Saturday, the 40-year-old admitted he sometimes wants to leave his post as United boss and felt this way midweek.  

Amorim told reporters: "Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years. 

"Sometimes I love to be with my players, sometimes I don't want to be with them. So, again, I need to improve on that. It's going to be hard."

Asked whether he felt like he wanted to quit on Wednesday, he said: "I felt that after the game. I don't feel that now. So it's a little bit like that. 

"I think that is the hardest part of the defeat. Sometimes it's not the result, it's the way we lost that game or drew that game. That is the thing that is hard to accept."

Amorim was brutally honest in his post-match interviews at Blundell Park on Wednesday night.

He said his team "were completely lost", adding that "the players spoke really loud," before apologising to the fans for the performance.

Speaking on Friday, Amorim said he will continue to be this open and emotional after matches, despite "experienced people" saying he should "be more calm". 

The former Sporting manager said: "To be really honest with you guys, every time that we have or have in the future one defeat like that, I'm going to be like that. 

"Sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I want to defend my players. This is my way of doing things, and I'm going to be like that. 

"I know, again, that you have a lot of experienced people talking about the way I should perform with the media, to be more constant, to be more calm. I'm not going to be like that."

He added: "I'm going to be who I am. That's why I have the passion that I have. 

"In that moment, I was really upset and really disappointed because I felt that we had a very good pre-season, we were playing better, we were being consistent in the way we played.

"And then that kind of performance, I was really disappointed with everything."

United host Burnley on Saturday afternoon in a match that could prove pivotal in easing the scrutiny on the manager heading into the first international break of the season.

They have picked up just one point from their opening two Premier League games of the campaign, losing at home to Arsenal before drawing away at Fulham last weekend.
