Crystal Palace 1-1 Fulham result - Tom Cairney stunner cancels out Jean-Philippe Mateta header as the spoils are shared at Selhurst Park

Tom Cairney's 20-yard curler cancelled out Jean-Philippe Mateta's header as Crystal Palace and Fulham played out an entertaining 1-1 draw on New Year's Day.

Cairney may be turning 35 later this month but he's certainly still got it as the Fulham captain came off the bench to score his first goal since May, a cracker to earn the Cottagers a hard-fought point at Selhurst Park.

Palace had managed the game effectively before Cairney's strike and would have been good value for all three points, but they were unable to hold on for a first Premier League win since December 7, also against Fulham.

Marco Silva's side, on a run of three successive Premier League victories before their trip to Selhurst, could have won it late on as Dean Henderson made a superb save to deny Timothy Castagne and former Palace man Joachim Andersen skied over the bar from close range.

In the end, the draw was probably the fairest result on a cold evening in north London. The result saw both Palace and Fulham rise into the Premier League top half to kick off 2026.
