Mohamed Salah and Alessio Russo win Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards after stellar campaigns

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah crowned a Premier League title and a new contract with the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award. Alongside him, Arsenal forward Alessia Russo was given the nod for the women's award. Russo's Arsenal missed out on the Women's Super League title, but the Gunners are due to meet Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League final in Lisbon.

Mohamed Salah and Alessia Russo won the men’s and women’s Football Writers’ Association awards for player of the season.
The men’s award went to Liverpool forward Salah, who has scored 28 goals and made 18 assists so far in the Premier League this season, a record of 46 combined goal involvements since the Premier League moved to 38 games a season.
The Egypt international has 33 goals in total for his club, as Arne Slot's Liverpool secured their 20th league title, moving them level in the all-time standings with Manchester United.
After the best part of a year of speculation concerning his future at Anfield, the 32-year-old signed a two-year contract extension to stay at Liverpool.
This is the third time he has won the award, equalling Arsenal great Thierry Henry’s record.
Salah received 90% of the votes from FWA members, which is the largest margin this century.
His team-mate Virgil van Dijk was in second place, with Alexander Isak of Newcastle third while Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice was fourth.

Arsenal star Russo has picked up the women's award

In the women’s award, Arsenal forward Russo beat Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw - last year’s winner - to win the award, with Shaw in second spot.
Russo has 12 goals and two assists to her name in the Women’s Super League, though her team are 12 points adrift of Chelsea with one game left of the league season.
In addition, the former Manchester United player contributed eight goals and another two assists in the Champions League.
Arsenal will play current holders Barcelona in Lisbon in the final on May 24.
Behind Shaw, in third place, was another Arsenal player, Mariona Caldentey. Chelsea’s Millie Bright was fourth.
