West Ham United forward Michail Antonio has undergone surgery on a lower limb fracture following a car crash on Saturday, his club confirmed. Michail Antonio has undergone surgery on a fractured lower limb following a traffic accident he was involved in, confirmed West Ham United.
The east London club provided an update on Sunday afternoon, noting that the striker will be kept in hospital for monitoring "over the coming days".
The club's latest statement also thanked the "overwhelming support" from football clubs and supporters in the wake of the incident.
They also showed "heartfelt" gratitude to the emergency services who treated and continue to support Antonio.
"Everyone at the club wishes Michail a speedy recovery and wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the football family at large for the overwhelming support shown since yesterday’s news, as well as extending a heartfelt thank you to the emergency services and first responders who attended to Michail in the immediate aftermath of the incident, and the medical team who continue to aid him in his recovery," read Sunday's statement.
"The club will provide further updates when appropriate."
On Saturday, The Hammers said the forward was "conscious and communicating" while under close supervision at a hospital in central London after an incident in Essex.
A West Ham statement posted to X read: "West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio is in a stable condition following a road traffic accident this afternoon in the Essex area.
"Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital.
"At this difficult time, we kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy of Michail and his family.
"The club will make no further comment this evening, but will issue a further update in due course."
The club confirmed Antonio's crash on Saturday afternoon with a statement that read: "West Ham United can confirm striker Michail Antonio has today been involved in a road traffic accident.
"The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Michail, his family and friends at this time."
Antonio, who is the club's second longest-serving player, played in West Ham's 3-1 defeat at Leicester in midweek as a second-half substitute.
The club are scheduled to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.
Several clubs responded to West Ham's initial update, with Antonio's former club Nottingham Forest writing: "The thoughts of everyone at Nottingham Forest are with Michail, his family and friends."
