Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Newcastle United – Premier League results as Alexander Isak scores winner after Anthony Gordon cancelled out Dominic Solanke's opener

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou said that the ‘last thing’ that he wanted was an explanation about why Anthony Gordon’s equaliser was allowed to stand.

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart felt that Anthony Gordon’s equaliser was ‘unfortunate’ after VAR failed to rule out the striker, despite Joelinton’s handball in the build-up.

“I like the laws, I like the clarity,” Hart said. "I’ve got no qualms with that. Straight away, that’s the conversation, what are the rules as that is the only way we can form an opinion on this in terms of what’s gone on, on the pitch.

“We can discuss it, we can all talk about what we think should happen, a huge human element coming into it, obviously a huge benefit to Newcastle, the fact that it did turn over, but when the rules are in front of you stating it was in an abnormal position, it was a natural position, ball turned over, it was unfortunate for Spurs.”

Alexander Isak scored the winner as Newcastle United completed a battling 2-1 victory at Tottenham Hotspur.

An injury-hit Spurs were forced to play a side with an average age of under 24 – the youngest Tottenham line-up in 10 years.

Despite also having illness in their squad it was Ange Postecoglou’s side who snatched a fourth-minute lead.

Dominic Solanke ghosted around his marker before meeting Pedro Porro’s inviting cross with a diving header.

Just two minutes later the Magpies were level with a controversial goal amid claims the ball deflected off Joelinton’s hand in the build-up before Anthony Gordon netted.

Newcastle commanded the first half and the winner came on 20 minutes with Isak in the right place to tap home Jacob Murphy’s inviting ball.

Spurs threw everything at their visitors in the second half and Solanke went close twice with headed efforts.

However, a stubborn Newcastle defensive display saw the visitors maintain their top-four hopes with a sixth win on the bounce in all competitions.

That’s full-time after almost 13 minutes of added time following a pulsating encounter. Newcastle grind out a 2-1 victory.

A late challenge by the Spurs substitute on Tonali and a deserved booking.

It’s the same combination as so many times in this game.

It was nearly all over as Barnes was found released through on goal. However, goalkeeper Austin was out quickly and made a smart save.

A ball in for the Tottenham forward clips the top of his head and then loops towards goal. Dubravka gets a tip as the ball flies just over.

The Newcastle defender looks to have picked up a niggle on his return. He is replaced for these last minutes by Kelly.

Spurs have 10 minutes to get something from this game. On their second half display the hosts deserve something.

Son makes a driving run into the box resulting in Kulusevski flashing an effort across the six-yard box which is met by Reguilon who also drives his effort across goal and wide.

Son takes a short corner which catches out Newcastle. Maddison is given enough space to shoot from a tight angle. The effort has Dubravka beaten but flashes just wide.

On his return from injury Botman is booked after blocking the run of Madison on the edge of the box. Botman claims he was unable to move out of the way.

A first change for Newcastle as Barnes comes on for a bloodied Gordon.

The Magpies are in two tight banks of four as they look to withstand this Spurs pressure.

Burn could have been sent off in the first half, but is now a towering presence in the Newcastle defence.

An accumulation of fouls by the Newcastle man results in a yellow card. The final straw was a sloppy foul on Son.

The ball is played into the path of the Tottenham forward who is charging into the box. However, the ball gets stuck under his feet and the chance is wasted.

The goalkeeper has not put a step wrong in this match.

Under pressure the Spurs shot stopper grabs the ball before dropping down onto it but takes a knock in the process.

Momentum looks to have shifted in this second half as Spurs have brought on some fresh legs.

Son will need to pull something out of the bag.
