Liverpool may not have won the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, but they did see one of their players create a little piece of history amongst the chaos and carnage.
With an assist for Alexis Mac Allister’s goal before scoring one of his own in the second half, Mohamed Salah moved to 23 Premier League goal contributions away from home this season.
That tally is now already the most by a player in a single Premier League season, overtaking Andrew Cole's 21 involvements in 1993/94 (in the era of 42-game seasons, giving him two extra away games).
What’s incredible to consider is that Salah has only played 13 games away from Anfield, with six more away matches to come between now and the end of the season.
Let’s take a deeper look into some of the records that Salah has already broken and what more he could do by the end of May.
Liverpool’s remaining away games
Before we start, it's important to consider Liverpool’s remaining away games in the Premier League this season when weighing up which records he might break.
- Aston Villa v Liverpool – Wednesday, February 19
- Manchester City v Liverpool – Sunday, February 23
- Fulham v Liverpool – Saturday, April 5
- Leicester City v Liverpool – Saturday, April 19
- Chelsea v Liverpool – Saturday, May 3
- Brighton & Hove Albion v Liverpool – Sunday, May 18

While one is against a relegation-threatened side, the rest are all against the pack currently sitting between 4th-10th in the table, as Liverpool push for the Premier League title in their first season under manager Arne Slot.
Of course, some of these dates may be moved around depending on how far The Reds progress in Europe.
Records to break in the Premier League
As mentioned, in Premier League history no player has more goals and assists combined away from home in a season than Salah’s 23.
But the Egyptian has a chance to break the record for both statistics individually, too.
The record for most away goals in a season in Premier League history stands at 16. That record is jointly shared by Kevin Philips in 1999/2000 for Sunderland and Harry Kane in 2022/23 for Tottenham Hotspur.
Salah is currently on 14 goals along with seven other players. What is particularly crazy here is that Salah has done this in just 13 games. Those level with him have all taken 17 matches or more.

When we look at assists, it is a similar tale. The record currently stands at 11, set by Cesc Fabregas for Chelsea in 2014/15.
As with goals, Salah is just two behind on nine, along with seven other players. All of those level with him played a minimum of 18 away games - though a big shout-out to Muzzy Izzet in his final season at Leicester City in 2003/04, as he got 10 assists in just 15 games, even as the Foxes suffered relegation from the top flight.
Both the goals and assists tallies are all very bunched together, so with Salah playing at such a high level this season – and still having six games left to go – he could well obliterate these records.
Records to break across Europe
But what about in Europe and the rest of the 'big five' leagues? The data here shows Salah still has a way to go.
Looking at data back to 2006/07 onwards, unsurprisingly, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo sit top of the list.

The Argentinian maestro recorded 31 goal contributions (24 goals and seven assists) in just 17 La Liga away matches in 2012/13 for Barcelona, whilst his Portuguese rival matched his tally by scoring 23 and assisting eight in 18 games in 2014/15 at Real Madrid.
Messi and Ronaldo make up eight of the top 10 for this period, with Luis Suarez’s 2015/16 season at Barca the only other inclusion alongside Salah.
For the Liverpool forward to match this record, he’ll need to score or assist seven more goals in his final six matches, and even then he would still sit behind them in the table because he’ll have played more games.
So, eight more contributions would make sure the record is his. That is a really tall order, but it does genuinely feel as if he has a chance to create his own piece of history.

How did Salah look under Klopp?
One final note of interest is how this compares to Liverpool players’ records under former manager Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool were seen as a team that liked playing away because home sides would attack them more and that would in turn leave more space for them in Klopp’s high-octane style.
However, Salah’s stats this season have already blown past the best away performances by any player under Klopp.
The record for players under Klopp was Salah himself in 2021/22, when he registered a combined 18 away goals and assists.
Salah’s performances are part of Liverpool’s impressive form away from Anfield this season. Not only are they top of the Premier League away table by a mammoth eight points (and undefeated), but they have also scored 10 more goals than any other side.
Contrast that to the home table where they are second, two points behind Arsenal (with a game in hand) and only the joint-fourth highest scorers.
It has been one of the fascinating quirks of Slot’s reign as Liverpool manager, and an extra plot point in this title race will be seeing which other records can be broken in the Dutchman's first season in England.
