Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus were on target as West Ham moved into the top six with a 2-0 victory over a toothless Manchester United at the London Stadium.

Erik ten Hag’s visitors had been hoping to build upon a morale-boosting draw at high-flying Liverpool last time out and they had the best opening of a turgid first half when Alejandro Garnacho fluffed a one-on-one with Alphonse Areola.

West Ham had offered little as an attacking force but stole in front 18 minutes from time when Bowen netted his 11th league goal of the season off Lucas Paqueta’s exquisite pass.

The hosts then doubled their advantage six minutes later when Paqueta set Kudus free to side-step his man and rifle a low shot into the far corner.

The result means David Moyes’s men rise above The Red Devils into sixth and within four points of the top four. Man United drop to eighth following an eighth league loss of the campaign and are six points adrift of fourth-placed Man City having played a game more.

Next up, Ten Hag’s side host Aston Villa on Boxing Day. West Ham visit Arsenal on Thursday December 28. 

Paul Scholes: "I felt United were the better team in the first half without really thinking they were going to score a goal. I always felt, against West Ham, they are the type of team that make you fell comfortable, then all of a sudden a quick spark, and you are tow goals down.

"But United have got problems. Goalscoring is a big issue. That's four games without a goal. In the second half, I can't think of a save their keeper had to make."

Joe Cole: "It was fantastic. It shows the importance of staying in the game. West ham for large parts were not at it at all. United looked comfortable. Then all of a sudden a tactical switch ,Paqueta moves into the false nine. It was a stroke of genius that turned the game."

He added: "For West Ham to beat Man United at any time is massive."
