Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham Hotspur: Premier League result as Mohamed Salah, Richarlison among goals in thriller at Anfield

Tottenham Hotspur’s refreshed hopes of a top-four finish took a major blow after they were beaten 4-2 against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Fourth-placed Aston Villa lost earlier in the day which gave Spurs a route back into the race for UEFA Champions League football, but they were well beaten by Jurgen Klopp’s side to remain seven points adrift.

Mohamed Salah scored on his return to the side and headed Liverpool ahead in the first half, before Andy Robertson doubled the hosts' lead on the stroke of half-time with a close-range effort.

Liverpool, who were defending what was left of their unlikely title chances, extended their lead shortly into the second period when Cody Gakpo latched onto the end of Harvey Elliott’s cross before the latter rifled a spectacular effort into the top corner for a fourth.

Tottenham threatened to mount a comeback when Richarlison and Heung-Min Son scored late on, but they would only go down as consolation goals as Liverpool held on for maximum points.

Nunez misses a one-on-one, and that's that! Liverpool take all three points. A brilliant game at Anfield.

But he's offside.

It was another electric Liverpool counter-attack, finished with the Egyptian slamming the ball into the roof of the net from close range but the assistant referee's flag was up.

Nunez gallops forward and looks for Gakpo in the middle of the box but his cross strikes the arm of Van der Van and Liverpool want a penalty. They won't get one though.

A lengthy amount of added time to be played at the end of the second half, but surely not enough for Liverpool to let this one slip.

Johnson clattered into the post and hurt himself, but there is a check to see whether Gomez had any part in it. His boot was very high, but he won the ball cleanly so there will be no further action.

The Liverpool goalie denies Richarlison's effort across goal and Johnson is ready to nod home into an empty net at the back post, but Gomez shows unbelievable athleticism to poke the ball away with a high boot.

The defender has (somehow) seen Vicario off his line and gone for it from the halfway line, but his speculative effort floats over the bar.

Liverpool look to hit back straight away and Elliott crosses to Gravenberch, who shoots first time but doesn't get much purchase on the ball, but it falls to Salah who doesn't really know what to do with it as it bounces across goal!

The chance was there to restore the three-goal lead...

We have 12 minutes plus stoppage time. Another Spurs goal and it's game back on!

Richarlison has his back to goal and lays the ball back to Son who slams home to close the gap to two!

Darwin Nunez gets the nod, as does Ryan Gravenberch. Diaz and Mac Allister come off.

Johnson gets down the right and sweeps a low cross into Richarlison who arrives in the box before slipping the ball beyond Alisson with a tidy finish.

Richarlison plays a ball to the Spurs forward in the box but the Brazilian looked miles off before receiving the ball. Son is on his own in front of goal but still misses.

That sums Tottenham's afternoon up...

Robertson and Endo are replaced by Joe Gomez and Stefan Bajcetic.

Maddison, Richarlison and Oliver Skipp are introduced as Kulusevski, Bentancur and Royal make way.

What a finish from Harvey Elliott!

Salah tees him up on the edge of the box, he cuts in on his left foot and rifles an effort right into the far top left corner. Vicario had no chance! This could get really ugly for Ange Postecoglou.

He tries to stop Salah from spinning away on the halfway line, which he does illegally is rightly cautioned.
