After Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Brentford to begin their 2023-24 Premier League campaign, manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed Cristian Romero should have been taken off as a concussion sub, but the club filled out the wrong form. The defender clashed heads with Bryan Mbuemo early in the match but carried on and scored the opening goal in the 11th minute before being replaced by Davinson Sanchez.

‘We need to improve and have to improve’ - Postecoglou after Tottenham draw with Brentford

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said Cristian Romero wasn’t taken off as a concussion sub during a 2-2 draw with Brentford because the club filled out the wrong form.
The defender opened Tottenham’s Premier League account in the 11th minute in what would prove to be one of his final acts of the game following an earlier head injury.
The Spurs man collided in the air with Bryan Mbuemo shortly after kick-off at the Gtech Community Stadium, with both receiving treatment before carrying on.
Eight minutes later, Romero rose highest to meet James Maddison’s exquisite delivery and bullet a header past Mark Flekken in the Brentford goal to give Postecoglou a dream start as Spurs boss.
But the defender’s joy was short-lived as he was whipped off two minutes later as a result of the clash. Romero was clearly reluctant to leave the field, but the Australian was insistent and later said he would always "err on the side of caution" when it comes to head injuries.
"He got a head knock and it was pretty clear," Postecoglou said. "The medical team were monitoring him as he progressed from there and then he scored with his head.
"They were pretty sure we needed for his own benefit to get him off and obviously what we know about head injuries, for me it is not even an issue. We will always err on the side of caution.
"Cristian the player is not the one you listen to in those situations because he doesn't know what is going either, so I thought it was pretty clear what we had to do. Disappointed that we apparently filled out the wrong slip and it was not a concussion sub.
"In this day and age where what we know about head injuries, if we are going to worry about what form we fill out, I thought it was pretty clear what happened but hopefully he'll be okay."
After Romero's removal, there was more bad news for Spurs, who began life without Harry Kane after the striker’s move to Bayern Munich.
Brentford hit back through a Mbuemo penalty in the 26th minute after a clumsy challenge by Heung-min Son on Mathias Jensen was flagged by VAR and then moved ahead in the 37th minute when Yoane Wissa swept home Rico Henry’s delivery.
However, Tottenham levelled before half time when Emerson Royal flashed a first-time strike past Flekken to make it 2-2 and claim a share of the spoils.
