Just as Arsenal v Manchester United appeared destined for a 1-1 draw, Declan Rice struck in the 96th minute to spark pandemonium in the Emirates. And it soon got even better for Mikel Arteta's side. Moments later, Gabriel Jesus wandered through an AWOL United defence before slotting past Andre Onana to cap a stunning late show as Arsenal closed within two points of leaders Manchester City.

Arsenal struck twice in injury time to stun Manchester United with a 3-1 win at the Emirates.
A tepid first half exploded into life after 27 minutes when United broke quickly from their own half and Marcus Rashford finished emphatically. The lead lasted barely two minutes, as Gabriel Martinelli soon picked out Martin Odegaard to drive in the equaliser.
Arsenal thought they had a penalty early in the second half when Kai Havertz went down in the area, until Anthony Taylor overturned his original decision after being called to the monitor to review it.
In the second half Rasmus Hojlund finally made his Manchester United debut.
Bukayo Saka had a chance from close range for Arsenal, before a late strike from Alejandro Garnacho for United was ruled out for offside.
With the game looking to be drifting towards a draw, a deflected injury-time strike by Declan Rice sent the Emirates wild before substitute Gabriel Jesus broke away a few minutes later to seal an astonishing win.

TALKING POINT - Is something happening here?

When Arsenal put United away with a late goal in a close game here last season, there were wild celebrations. Throughout the season they were accused of celebrating too much, too early, and their critics felt smug justification as Manchester City reeled them in with ease to win the Premier League.
Today, the Emirates exploded again. In a wild finish they looked to have lost the game when Garnacho appeared to have scored, only to get the reprieve of a tight offside call. From there, they pinned back United in injury time to score twice, sending the Emirates ecstatic.
The celebrations were even more delirious than in January, and we’re four games into the season; Arteta’s team drained plenty out of turning over Manchester City in the Community Shield too. Whatever they take from these landmark wins, and however they celebrate it, one thing is clear; this team finds a way to win big games, and late daggers like these ones are the calling cards of successful teams. There’s a long way to go, but it’s a useful habit to get into when you’re chasing down City for the biggest prize of all, and they can be rightly pleased with it.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH – Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal)

The most engaging battle of what became an absorbing game was between Martinelli and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. It went back and forth but Martinelli ultimately edged it, winning corner after corner and pinning United back on that side. Eventually, the pressure that Martinelli was key in building all told.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

27’ GOAL! ARSENAL 0 MANCHESTER UNITED 1 (RASHFORD 27) From nothing United lead, and it's a stunner! Eriksen intercepts a ball on the edge of his own area, and breaks forwards. He then slides a lovely long pass through to Rashford on the left of the Arsenal box. Rashford cuts across White and Saliba, and unloads off his right; Ramsdale gets fingertips on it, but the ball flies in off the post. Wow!
29’ GOAL! ARSENAL 1 (ODEGAARD 29) MANCHESTER UNITED 1 We've got a game now folks! Arsenal find Martinelli again down the left of the area. He squares it to the penalty spot area where Odegaard walks onto the ball, unmarked, and lashes a shot into the bottom corner. Double wow!
88’ DISALLOWED GOAL! Oh my, have United nicked it? They win it in midfield again, and work a quick three touch move for Rashford to release Garnacho, who is clean through in the middle of the pitch, and slides it brilliantly past Ramsdale. It's VAR checked though, and it's so tight...and he's just off! Crikey.
90+6’ GOAL! ARSENAL 2 (RICE 90+6') MANCHESTER UNITED 1 Arsenal have stolen it! The corner is looped over everyone to the back post, where Rice is free. He chests it down, and wallops it low to the near post; Onana gets hands on it but can't keep it out, and what a huge goal that is! It caught a slight nick off Evans on the way, like Rice will care!
90+11’ ARSENAL 3 (JESUS 90+11') MANCHESTER UNITED 1 It's a foul on Evans, and United have one last chance to put it in the box. Arsenal clear, and work the ball through to Jesus, who is through. He cuts across the sliding Evans and calmly slots past Onana; if you thought the Emirates was popping a few minutes ago, it's off the map now!

KEY STAT

This victory was Arsenal’s third successive home league victory over Manchester United, the first time they’ve achieved this since George Graham’s team managed it between 1988-91.
