Southampton 3-3 Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs suffer top-four blow as Saints grab late draw in Premier League

James Ward-Prowse scored a stoppage-time penalty as Southampton came back from 3-1 down to draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at St Mary’s. Had Tottenham won, they would have leapfrogged Manchester United into third. However, a draw means that Spurs remain in fourth – one point below United and two above Newcastle having played two more games than their top-four rivals.

'It's unacceptable' - Conte to players after 3-3 draw at Southampton

Southampton completed a sensational comeback in stoppage time to hold Tottenham to a 3-3 draw.
It was a game that struggled to get going in the first half due to the number of stoppages. Four players had to be replaced due to injury inside the first 37 minutes, including both of Southampton's central defenders in Armel Bella-Kotchap and Jan Bednarek.
After firing two previous efforts over the bar, Pedro Porro made no mistake with his third attempt by smashing it past Gavin Bazunu to score his first goal for Spurs and put his side ahead.
Southampton responded instantly after the break, scoring one minute into the second half. Theo Walcott did brilliantly to fire a pass across the face of goal and Che Adams was on hand to poke it home from close range for his fifth Premier League goal of the season.
Harry Kane put Tottenham back ahead in the 65th minute when the England international rose highest to head home Dejan Kulusevski's inch-perfect cross.
Antonio Conte's side added another goal 15 minutes from time and looked to have wrapped up all three points when Ivan Perisic fired a terrific effort past Bazunu to make it 3-1.
Southampton pulled one back in the 77th minute, Walcott found himself in space and calmly side footed his effort past Fraser Forster.
Saints continued to push forward and in the 93rd minute completed their comeback, Pape Sarr fouled Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the box and James Ward-Prowse was on hand to hold his nerve and emphatically convert the penalty.

TALKING POINT - SAINTS' SPIRIT COULD SEE THEM SURVIVE

Southampton's improvement under Ruben Selles has gone somewhat under the radar due to their lowly league position, but this late fightback is another good result for a side who are starting to move in the right direction. Selles has presided over six Premier League games as Southampton boss, has beaten Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, beaten fellow strugglers Leicester City at home and his Saints side have now taken a point each from games against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. He entered into the job with a tough run of fixtures ahead and they will continue to be difficult until the end of the season but if Southampton can show the same intensity and spirit as they did in the second half, they have as much chance as any of the bottom eight to stay up.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - THEO WALCOTT (SOUTHAMPTON)

The 34-year-old was brilliant, and instrumental in getting them back into the game. It was his brilliantly timed run and quality assist for Adams that initially got Southampton back on level terms and when Saints had fallen 3-1 behind it was Walcott's smartly taken finish which made it 2-3 and sparked the comeback. A great display.
