Newcastle 6-1 Tottenham Hotspur: Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak both net braces as Spurs crumble

As a contest, Newcastle v Spurs was all over inside ten minutes, as a Toon blitz saw the hosts go 3-0 up in stunning style. They added two more through Alexander Isak to go 5-0 up after 21 minutes as Spurs capitulated. Harry Kane got one back early in the second-half, but there was to be no famous comeback as Newcastle took a giant leap towards finishing in a Champions League spot.

'The worst I've ever seen' - Stellini on terrible start Spurs made against Newcastle

Newcastle United took a major step towards Champions League qualification as they thrashed hapless Tottenham Hotspur 6-1 at St James' Park.
Just one place separated the sides at kick-off but they were chasms apart once the game started as Spurs astonishingly found themselves 5-0 down with only 21 minutes played.
Newcastle led within 70 seconds, Jacob Murphy tapping in after Hugo Lloris failed to deal with a shot from Joelinton, and it was a sign of things to come.
Joelinton himself made it two when a long ball bypassed Spurs' entire defence, the Brazilian duly rounding Lloris to roll into an empty net.
Murphy then scored from long range to make it 3-0 in just the ninth minute - again benefitting from questionable goalkeeping.
A quickfire brace from Alexander Isak make it 5-0, the first of those goals made possible by a brilliant Joe Willock through-ball.
Harry Kane scored a consolation goal for Tottenham shortly after the break, but substitute Callum Wilson restored Newcastle's five-goal advantage.
Victory lifts the Magpies to third in the Premier League and 59 points - six more than fifth-placed Spurs, who have played a game more.

'Nothing was decided today' - Howe after Newcastle's 6-1 drubbing of Tottenham

TALKING POINT - Dreadful Tottenham hit new low

Tottenham's season went from farce to freefall in a crazy opening half an hour. The defenders had no idea what they were doing, the forwards no involvement in the game save for taking restarts and occasionally failing to hold up the ball, and the midfield no resistance to offer. It was a performance befitting a club with no permanent manager, no managing director of football and frankly no vision from the top of what the club should be.
Bringing on Davinson Sanchez - a player booed by his own fans a week ago - within 25 minutes because Tottenham were 5-0 down and their personnel incapable of playing a back four, encapsulated what a mess this season has become.
Credit to Newcastle for taking advantage of the chaotic opposition who stood in their way, but we learnt more about Tottenham as currently constructed today than we did the Magpies.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Joelinton (Newcastle United)

Offered plenty of energy, took his goal excellently and also made the first. Pedro Porro had no clue what to do with Joelinton at the start of the match and the Brazilian cashed in.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

NEWCASTLE TAKE EARLY LEAD 2' - It's a dream start for the hosts! Joelinton cuts in from the left and Porro, Romero and Hojbjerg all fail to stop him. Once in the box, Joelinton shoots and Lloris saves - but only parries the ball as far as Murphy, who taps in the rebound.
NEWCASTLE DOUBLE LEAD 6' - Schar, in the right-back area, plays a long ball over the top where Joelinton's run is not tracked. The Brazilian takes the ball down well, rounds Lloris and makes it 2-0.
MURPHY ADDS LONG-RANGE THIRD 9' - Murphy hits and hopes from 30 yards and Lloris, who does not move, simply watches the ball nestle in the net.
ISAK MAKES IT FOUR 19' - Newcastle turn defence into attack in a flash as Willock plays a wonderful outside-of-the-foot pass to release Isak, who slots past Lloris when one-on-one.
ISAK SCORES AGAIN 21' - Isak has a quickfire brace! The Swede fires low past Lloris after Longstaff tees him up. Yet more dreadful defending.
KANE GETS ONE BACK 49' - Kane squares up Schar, goes past the Swiss with ease and drives a left-footed shot low past Pope.
SUBS QUICKLY MAKE MAGPIES' SIXTH 67' - Opting not to cross, Trippier passes to Almiron. The Paraguayan's toe-poke is blocked but Wilson is on hand to sweep in the rebound.

KEY STAT

Newcastle have not experienced a five-goal win in the Premier League since January 2011.
